Science offers programmes leading to the award of the following Honours Bachelor of Science (BSc) (Hons) Degrees:

A three-year exit award, the BSc Ordinary Degree (NFQ Level 7, Major Award), is awarded to students who achieve a pass standard in the Third Year in an honours degree programme and opt to exit the programme and to be conferred with a BSc Ordinary Degree.

Regulations Applying to All Years

Modules

Programmes are defined in terms of modules. Modules are measured in credits. A module may correspond to 5, 10, 15 or 20 credits. A year of a degree programme consists of modules to a total value of 60 credits. Module descriptions are contained in the Book of Modules, 2015/2016.

Subject Abbreviations

The abbreviations listed below are used throughout the section and correspond to the various subjects offered within Science. Specific modules are identified by a two lettered code followed by a number (e.g. BL1002 corresponds to a Biology module which is taught in First Science).

Selection of Modules

The selection of any module by a student is conditional on the approval of the Professor or Lecturer concerned and the College being satisfied that the student is capable of profiting by attendance thereat; a similar condition attaches to the selection of an honours rather than a pass module, where such a choice exists. Selection, where necessary, will be on the basis of academic merit. No student may select two modules which involve a timetable clash.

Change of Module

Students wishing to register a change of module must do so via the Student Portal or at the Student Records and Examinations Office no later than two weeks after the start of each Semester, i.e. by Friday, 18 September 2015 (Semester 1) or Friday, 22 January 2016 (Semester 2). Semester 1 modules cannot be changed in Semester 2. No changes in registration will be allowed after these deadlines.

Concerning modules that commence at the start of Semester 1 which are completed within six weeks, no change will be permitted after the end of the second week of Semester 1, and any missed practicals are to be made up by the student, should the department/School require.

Progress Through Degree Programmes

A student must pass each year to progress to the next year of a degree programme. The rules governing pass and progression will be contained in the Marks and Standards 2016 Book. Note: Special requirements for passing individual modules, if any, are detailed in the Book of Modules, 2015/2016.

Assessment of Practical Work

In modules which include practical work - assessed continuously, by examination or both - students must satisfy the examiners in this aspect of assessment as well as in the end of semester written examinations. The examiners will, where possible, take into account the work done by students during the year, as shown by the certified records of their work. These records, in the form of notebooks, laboratory specimens, preparations, etc., must be submitted for inspection as and when requested.

Full details of regulations governing Examinations for each programme are contained in the Marks and Standards 2016 Book, and for each module in the Book of Modules, 2015/2016.

Three Year Rule

Students must pass the First University Examination in Science within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule means that the student may be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College only for very serious reasons.

Students wishing to study for a degree in Science are required to apply for admission through the Central Applications Office (CAO), by the prescribed date, to one of seven First Science Areas of Study:

4. Students who wish to graduate with degrees in the Biological Sciences must take module CM1201 in first year OR module CM2201 in second year to be eligible for these degrees: Biochemistry,Microbiology, Neuroscience, Physiology.
5. Students who wish to graduate with degrees in the Biological Sciences must take module BT1001 in first year OR module BT2001 in second year to be eligible for these degrees: Biochemistry, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Physiology.
