CHEMISTRY

NFQ Level 8, Major Award

Students may enter Second Science Chemistry from the following First Science Areas of Study: Biological and Chemical Sciences (CK402) or Chemical Sciences (CK406), provided they have passed First Science and passed the module CM1000 (or CM1200 and CM1201 for students entering 2nd Science in 2016/17), and may proceed to a BSc (Hons) Degree in Chemistry.

The Second Science programme consists of nine modules of Chemistry to the value of 40 credits and additional modules to the value of 20 credits offered by cognate departments.

Students passing Second Science enter the honours degree programme in Chemistry in Third Year. The Third Year programme consists of nine core modules of Chemistry (60 credits).

The Fourth Year programme consists of seven core modules to the value of 40 credits, one optional module to the value of 5 credits chosen from the theme areas: Synthesis and Mechanism; Materials and Structure; Environmental and Analytical and the module CM4206 (15 credits), which contains research projects, continuous assessments and the problem paper examination.

Elective Modules

In Second Year no more than 15 credits may be selected from any elective subject. The selection of elective modules in Second Science may depend on the student having taken the corresponding prerequisite elective module(s) in First Science.

Examinations

Three Year Rule

Students must pass the Second University Examination in Science - Chemistry within three academic years from the date of first registration for Second Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College only for very serious reasons.

Transfer from Second Science Chemistry to Biochemistry

Students who have taken Second Science Chemistry with BC2001, BC2002 and ML2001 may apply to the Head of the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology by the First Friday in August to transfer to the Third Science Biochemistry Degree programme. Awarding of places is subject to the approval of the Head of the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and will be included in the Biochemistry quota of 30.

Please complete the transfer form available here and submit to the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology Administration office 3.19, Western Gateway Building, Western Rd, UCC.

Examinations

Students who have passed Third Year may choose not to proceed to Fourth Year and may opt instead to be conferred with a BSc Ordinary Degree.

Examinations

The Fourth Science Research Project(s) module must be passed for the award of a BSc (Hons) Degree. There is no Autumn Supplemental Examination in the Research Project(s) module which, if failed, must be repeated in a repeat year.
