MSc (Infection Prevention and Control)

The MSc in Infection Prevention and Control is a progression route from the Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control.
The MSc is a 90-credit, part-time programme delivered online over two years: Year 1 comprises the Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (30 credits) taken over nine months and Year 2 comprises an additional 60 credits (30 credits taught and 30 credits independent enquiry) taken over twelve months. The programme is designed on a module basis to meet the needs of working professionals.

Students must satisfactorily complete modules to the value of 90 credits.

Year 1
Year 1 comprises the Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (30 credits) taken over an academic year (nine months).

Year 2
In addition to the 30 credits completed as part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control, students take the following modules to the value of 60 credits:

EH6088 Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (Online) (5 credits)
EH6148 Application of Infection Prevention and Control in Practice (10 credits)
EH6149 Dissertation in Infection Prevention and Control (30 credits)
EH6153 Quantitative Research and Epidemiology (10 credits)
EH6157 Qualitative Research in Public Health (5 credits)

Examinations

Exit Award: Postgraduate Diploma in Infection Prevention and Control (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
Upon successful completion of modules to the value of at least 60 credits (including the 30 credits on the Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control and the 30 credits of taught modules above: EH6088, EH6148, EH6153 and EH6157) students may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Infection Prevention and Control.
Students who either fail to submit the research dissertation or fail to attain the pass standard in the dissertation in either the first or repeat year will graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Infection Prevention and Control.

  • Demonstrate the ability to contribute to the professional body of knowledge in the area of infection prevention and control.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate implementation of infection prevention and control guidelines;
  • Discuss the methods of investigating and controlling outbreaks of infection;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the common challenges in the application of infection prevention and control and strategies to manage same;
  • Critically evaluate effective teaching and support strategies in the implementation of infection prevention and control;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the application of different research approaches;
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the development and implementation of a systematic review.
