THE DEGREE OF LLB

NFQ Level 8

The LLB is a Bachelor of Laws degree which runs over two years full-time or four years part-time. In either case, such studies or research must be under such direction and supervision as may be approved by the School of Law. A full-time candidate may not, during the currency of the studies or research, simultaneously pursue any other form of education, training or employment, without the advance permission of the School of Law.

FULL-TIME

Year 1
Year 1 students take 60 credits in total including core modules to the value of 55 credits and elective modules to the value of 5 credits as follows:

Year 2
Students take 60 credits in total, including core modules to the value of 10 credits and elective modules to the value of 50 credits (other than those chosen in Year 1). Students who have already completed LW2249 and LW2250 or equivalent at degree level must instead choose 60 credits of elective modules.

Notes:

  • The candidate's choice of modules must be approved at the commencement of each year of studies.
  • Students are not permitted to take modules previously studied at honours degree level.
  • In certain cases with the permission of the Programme Director and relevant LLM Module Coordinator, Year 2 students may elect to take 10 credits from the modules available in the LLM (Taught) (see here) in substitution for 10 credits of elective modules.
  1. LW1106 and LW1107 are corequisites and must be taken together.
  2. LW1161 and LW1163 comprise the same module in English (LW1161) and as Gaeilge (LW1163). Students may register for either LW1161 or LW1163 but not both.
  3. LW1162 and LW1164 comprise the same module in English (LW1162) and as Gaeilge (LW1164). Students may register for either LW1162 or LW1164 but not both.
  4. Neither LW3303 nor LW3305 is available to students who have previously passed LW3352.
  5. LW3312 is not available to students who have previously passed LW3301.
  6. LW3313 is not available to students who have previously passed LW3302.

  • The candidate's choice of modules, and the sequence of module completion for part-time students, must be approved by the Programme Director at the commencement of each year of studies.
  • Students are not permitted to take modules previously studied at honours degree level.
  • In certain cases with the permission of the Programme Director and relevant LLM Module Coordinator, Year 2 students may elect to take 10 credits from the modules available in the LLM (Taught) (see here) in substitution for 10 credits of elective modules.
  1. LW1106 and LW1107 are corequisites and must be taken together.
  2. LW1161 and LW1163 comprise the same module in English (LW1161) and as Gaeilge (LW1163). Students may register for either LW1161 or LW1163 but not both.

Exit Award: Higher Diploma in Law (NFQ Level 8)
Upon successful completion of Year 1 Full-time or Years 1 and 2 Part-time students may opt not to proceed with the programme and exit with a Higher Diploma in Law.

Programme Learning Outcomes for LLB (NFQ Level 8)
On successful completion of the programme students should be able to:

  • Evaluate primary and secondary legal materials including legislation, international instruments, case-law and academic commentary;
  • Appreciate the interconnections between legal topics discussed;
  • Engage with academic discourse on legal themes;
  • Apply their knowledge of legal principles to hypothetical fact scenarios;
  • Use Information Technology appropriately for legal research and writing;
  • Formulate research questions and develop appropriate research methodologies;
  • Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving legal problems;
  • Demonstrate original, independent and critical thinking;
  • Demonstrate an ability to review and synthesise law in a lucid and scholarly manner;
  • Present arguments effectively and comprehensively;
  • Write clearly and in appropriate legal style, in accordance with legal writing standards.
