MA (FILM AND SCREEN MEDIA)

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MA in Film and Screen Media is a full-time programme, running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part I
FX6010 Irish Cinema: History, Contexts, Aesthetics (10 credits)
FX6017
Film and Screen Cultures and Industries (20 credits)
FX6018 Research Methodologies Seminar (10 credits)

plus 10 credits from the following:
GE6020 Questions of Adaptation and Adoption: Re-Writings/Re-Viewings/Re-Readings (10 credits)
FX6014 Introduction to Creative Practice (10 credits)**
MU6037 Music and Cinema (10 credits)

Note:

**FX6014 is an introductory module designed only for students that have not previously studied practical filmmaking
Not all optional modules may be available in a given year.

Part II
Students take one of the following modules:
FX6016 Dissertation in Film and Screen Media Studies (40 credits)
FX6019 Creative Practice Project (40 credits)

Examinations

Postgraduate Certificate in Film and Screen Media
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Film and Screen Media.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Develop their knowledge to an advanced level in the study of 20th and 21st century film;
  • Understand connections between theoretical, aesthetic, social and cultural contexts in the study of films;
  • Develop independent critical and research methods and scholarly research, writing and debate;
  • Introduce key concepts in film studies.

Programme Learning Outcomes for the Postgraduate Certificate in Film and Screen Media (NFQ Level 9, Minor Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Develop their knowledge to an advanced level in the study of 20th and 21st century film;
  • Understand connections between theoretical, aesthetic, social and cultural contexts in the study of films;
  • Develop independent critical and research methods and scholarly research, writing and debate;
  • Introduce key concepts in film studies.
