MA (DIGITAL CULTURES) - for Digital Egypt Builders Initiative

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MA in Digital Cultures is a full-time programme commencing in January each year. For students entering in 2022/23 the programme will commence in February 2023. The programme is delivered online by distance learning.

This is a closed recruitment programme delivered under an agreement with the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Egypt for students entering under the Digital Egypt Builders Initiative (DEBI).

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part 1
Students complete 60 credits as follows:
DH6101 Getting Started with Graduate Research and Generic Skills (5 credits)
DH6102 Digital Humanities Institute (5 credits)
DH6112 Communities of Practice in Digital Scholarship (10 credits)
DH6113 Conceptual Introduction to Digital Arts and Humanities (10 credits)
DH6114 Humanities and New Technologies: Tools and Methodologies (10 credits)
DH6115 Teaching and Learning in Digital Humanities (5 credits)
DH6116 Models, Simulations and Games (5 credits)
DH6117 Contemporary Practices in Publishing and Editing (5 credits)
DH6119 Principles of Game Design (5 credits)

Part 2
DH6120 Digital Cultures Dissertation (30 credits)
A dissertation of a maximum of 12,000-15,000 words must be submitted by a specified date.

Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Cultures (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
Candidates who pass each module in Part I (60 credits) and who fail Part II or who choose not to progress to Part II and exit the programme, will be conferred with the Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Cultures.

Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Cultures (NFQ Level 9, Minor Award)
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules (to include DH6113) may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Cultures.

Programme Learning Outcomes for MA in Digital Cultures (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the development and the major issues and debates in Digital Culture;
  • Demonstrate the ability to use digital tools commonly in use in the Digital Culture to capture and analyse source materials;
  • Participate in collaborative scholarly communities using digital tools;
  • Devise research questions which apply digital tools to arts, cultural and humanities issues;
  • Plan and conduct research at the appropriate level for a masters qualification;
  • Present their research in a thesis supported by relevant digital artefacts.

Programme Learning Outcomes for Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Cultures (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the development and the major issues and debates in Digital Culture;
  • Demonstrate the ability to use digital tools commonly in use in the Digital Culture to capture and analyse source materials;
  • Participate in collaborative scholarly communities using digital tools;
  • Devise research questions which apply digital tools to arts, cultural and humanities issues.
