The MA in the Sociology of Sustainability and Global Challenges is a full-time programme running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part I
SC6614 Sociological Methodology (10 credits)
SC6631 Sociology of Sustainable Development (10 credits)
SC6642 Social Theory and Climate Justice (10 credits)
plus
20 credits from the following:

SC6604 The Sociology of the Mass Media (10 credits)
SC6638 Rethinking Borders: Sovereignty, Rights and Justice (10 credits)
SC6639 Feminist Epistemologies: Feminisms, Sexuality and Society (10 credits)
SC6640 Governmentality: Disciplines, Institutions and Critiques (10 credits)
SC6643 Sociology of Science, Technology and Medicine (10 credits)
SC6644 Im/mobilities: forced migration and belonging (10 credits)

Part II
SC6615 Dissertation in Sociology (40 credits)

Postgraduate Certificate in the Sociology of Sustainability and Global Challenges
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in the Sociology of Sustainability and Global Challenges.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• Recognise the multi-dimensional nature of many Sustainability and Global Challenges trends, issues and problems and the core connection to poverty and global inequality;
• Identify, use, evaluate and interpret information from various sources to support analysis of Sustainability and Global Challenges trends, issues and problems;
• Develop and effectively apply sociological theories, methods and approaches in analysing challenges in the areas of Sustainability and Global Challenges;
• Design research projects and programmes to identify key Sustainability and Global Challenges issues and identify solutions;
• Identify and apply appropriate analytical techniques for effective development projects;
• Communicate effectively and confidently on subject-specific topics in the written and oral form;
• Communicate effectively with the academic community and with society at large;
• Work effectively as an individual and in teams in both disciplinary and multi-disciplinary settings.
