MSc (Leadership in Healthcare)

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MSc in Leadership in Healthcare is a part-time programme taken over two years. Entry is restricted to employees of the HSE, Tusla or Section 38 organisations.

NOTE: This programme has been revised. Students who entered the programme prior to Autumn 2022 follow the curriculum detailed below under Programme Requirements for students who commenced prior to Autumn 2022. Students who entered the programme in Autumn 2022 follow the curriculum detailed below under Programme Requirements for students commencing in Autumn 2022.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

IM6079 Understanding and Developing Leadership Practice (10 credits)
IM6080 Building Foundations for Team Effectiveness (10 credits)
IM6081 Making Sense of Organisational Values, Engagement and Service Delivery (10 credits)
IM6082 Delivering System-wide Co-ordinated Care (10 credits)
IM6083 Creating Engaging and Learning Cultures (10 credits)
IM6084 Evaluating Leadership Behaviours and Impacts (10 credits)
IM6109 Leadership in Healthcare Dissertation (30 credits)

Exit Award: Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership in Healthcare
Upon successful completion of modules to the value of at least 60 credits (including IM6079, IM6080, IM6081, IM6082, IM6083, IM6084) students may apply to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership in Healthcare (NFQ Level 9, Major Award).

Students take 90 credits as follows:

IM6109 Leadership in Healthcare Dissertation (30 credits)
IM6110 Personal Leadership in Delivering Compassionate Care (20 credits)
IM6111 Creating High Performance Teams in Healthcare (20 credits)
IM6112 Organisational Perspectives to Improve the Patient Experience (20 credits)

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Analyse and critically apply methodologies for the improvement of quality health care and patients experience;
  • Develop and integrate leadership skills into the organisation to support team building and enhanced delivery of service;

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate critical awareness of leadership behaviours and performance that impact on care quality and patient experience;
  • Critically apply theories and models to evaluate evidence of system-wide co-ordinated care to aid understanding of complex adaptive systems;
  • Demonstrate practical skills in team dynamics to progress influencing and sharing decision making to effect organisational change;
  • Analyse and critically apply theories of engaging, learning cultures and organisational values to improve care quality and patient experience;
  • Apply theories and methods of reflective practice.
