Modules
All Law programmes are defined in terms of modules. Modules are measured in terms of credits. A module may correspond to 5, 10, 15 or 20 credits. With the exception of the Evening BCL (Hons) Degree, each year of a degree/diploma programme consists of modules to a total value of 60 credits. See here for details of the Evening BCL (Hons) Degree.
Module descriptions are contained in the Book of Modules, 2022/2023.
Choice of Modules
In selecting modules, a student who intends to become a Barrister or Solicitor should keep in mind the requirements of the professional body concerned. See here.
Selection of Modules
The selection of any module by a student is conditional on the Professor or Lecturer concerned and the School being satisfied that they are capable of profiting by attendance thereat.
The following conditions apply to specific Language modules:
French, German and Spanish - The level at which a student is permitted to take a particular language module will be determined by an assessment carried out by the relevant Language Department at the start of the first Semester.
Italian - Students wishing to take Introduction to Written and Spoken Italian (IT1109) are recommended to have a minimum of Grade H4 in another modern continental language, or Irish, or Latin, or Greek in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Students taking IT1109 must register for this during the first week of Semester 1.
Electives
Students may be asked to indicate preferences for, or selection of, elective modules prior to the end of the preceding academic year.
The right is reserved not to offer any particular elective modules listed in the regulations. An elective module can be given only if teaching staff for that module is available and the module is selected by an adequate number of students, as determined by the Head of the Department concerned. The number of students selecting certain elective modules may, with the approval of the School, be limited. Details are given under the relevant module descriptions. Students may not select modules which involve a timetable clash.
Note: Full-time students will not be permitted to attend Evening Degree lectures, save by permission of the Head of School.
