MSc (Food Security Policy and Management)

The MSc in Food Security Policy and Management is a full-time programme running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part I
EH6122 Public Health Nutrition: From Principles to Practice (10 credits)
FE6013 Advanced Food Security Theory, Practice and Analysis (10 credits)
FE6014 Gender, Development and Rural Livelihoods (5 credits)
FE6015 Food Security in Humanitarian Crises (5 credits)
FE6016 Programme Planning and Impact Assessment (10 credits)
FE6507 Economics of Agri-Food Markets and Value Chain Analysis (5 credits)
FE6512 Sustainable Food Systems (5 credits)
FE6902 Global Food Policy Issues (5 credits)
IS6054 Health Information Systems and e-Health Analysis (5 credits)

Part II
FE6516 Applied Food Security Research Project (30 credits)

Examinations
Full details and regulations governing Examinations for each programme will be contained in the Marks and Standards 2021/2022 Book and for each module in the Book of Modules, 2021/2022.

Exit award: Postgraduate Diploma in Food Security Policy and Management
Students who successfully achieve the pass standard in taught modules to the value of 60 credits and who achieve an aggregate pass across taught modules to the value of 60 credits may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Food Security Policy and Management.

Programme Learning Outcomes for the MSc (Food Security Policy and Management) (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Identify the key drivers and factors influencing global food insecurity and malnutrition;
  • Apply advanced analytical techniques and design policies and project interventions to address international food security and nutrition challenges;
  • Conduct research and data analysis relating to food security and nutrition through the completion of an applied research project;
  • Communicate and work effectively to a high professional standard;
  • Demonstrate advanced analytical and problem solving skills associated with effective practice;
  • Engage in the application of advanced frameworks and techniques in organisational settings.

Programme Learning Outcomes for the Postgraduate Diploma in Food Security Policy and Management (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
