Programme Requirements
Students take modules to the value of 90 credits comprising of taught
modules to the value of 45 credits (Part I) and a dissertation to the
value of 45 credits (Part II).
Students take 90 credits as
follows:
Part I
HI6090 The Insular World in Text and Image (10 credits)
HI6091 Skills for Medieval Historians (10 credits) (not on offer in 2021/22)
HI6094 Historical Contexts for Medievalists (10 credits) (not on offer in 2021/22)
and either
LT6001 Beginners' Latin (15 credits)
or for students with prior
qualifications in Latin, LT6005 Latin Project (10
credits) and one other 5 credit Latin module chosen in consultation
with Staff, School of History.
or 15 credits from the following (in consultation with supervisor and with the approval of the MA coordinator)
AR2034 The Archaeology of Early Medieval and Viking Britain (5 credits)
AR3039 The Archaeology of Early Medieval Ireland (5 credits)
CC6001 Old Irish (10 credits) or CC6011 Continuing Old Irish (10 credits)
CC6008 Palaeography and Manuscript-based Research (10 credits)
CC6021 Devotion and Belief in Pre-Norman Ireland (10 credits)
CC6023 The Culture of Gender in Early Ireland (10 credits)
GR2031 The Rise of Christianity (5 credits)
HI2017 From Ireland to China: Travelling with Maps in the Middle Ages (5 credits)
HI2025 The Vikings (5 credits)
HI2031 Ireland and Rome: History, Culture and Contact (5 credits)
HI2038 The Tudors and Ireland (5 credits)
HI3051 Ireland and the Beginnings of Europe (5 credits)

Part II
HI6100 History Dissertation (45 credits)
A dissertation of a maximum of 20,000 words must be submitted by a
specified date in September.

Postgraduate Certificate in Medieval History
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Medieval History.
