The MA in English is a full-time programme running over 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Part I
EN6009 Contemporary Research: Skills, Methods and Strategies (10 credits)
EN6047 Irish Culture: Colonial, Postcolonial Transnational (10 credits)
EN6048 Gender and Sexuality (10 credits)
EN6049 Gothic to Modernism (10 credits)
EN6050 Space and Place in Irish Writing (10 credits) (not on offer in 2021/22)
FX6010 Irish Cinema: History, Contexts, Aesthetics (10 credits)

Part II
EN6017 Dissertation in English (40 credits)

Note: Subject to the approval of the MA programme co-ordinators, students may substitute one 10-credit module, apart from EN6009 and FX6010, with one of the following 10-credit modules: EN6020, EN6025, EN6026, EN6027, EN6028, EN6051, EN6052, EN6053, EN6054, EN6063.

Postgraduate Certificate in English (Irish Writing and Film)
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in English (Irish Writing and Film).

Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in English (Texts and Contexts, Medieval to Renaissance).


Programme Learning Outcomes for MA in English (Irish Writing and Film) (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Show a contemporary understanding of the defining character of Irish literary and cultural traditions from 1800 to the 2000s, and of Irish cinema;
  • Analyse and critically discuss selected major 19th- and 20th-century Irish texts in different genres (including film, fiction, poetry, drama);
  • Outline the key critical debates on Irish writing and film, and grasp the principal theoretical approaches used in these;
  • Write critical and analytical essays at an advanced post-graduate level, drawing on and contributing to existing criticism and interpretation in the field of study;
  • Deliver oral presentations to a professional standard using appropriate technology and AV supports;
  • Define and pursue a research topic in the specific field of study, developed through clear and recordable processes of enquiry and selection;
  • Apply appropriate research, bibliographical and critical skills in planning and writing a dissertation on this topic in a coherent and structured way.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
