The MA in Translation Studies is a full-time or part-time programme running for 12 months or 24 months from the date of first registration for the programme. It is currently available in Chinese, French, German, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

Students complete 90 credits as follows:

Postgraduate Certificate in Translation Studies (NFQ Level 9, Minor Award)
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules from the listing above may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Translation Studies.

Programme Learning Outcomes for MA in Translation Studies (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• Describe, elucidate and contextualise key theories, models and approaches in Translation Studies relevant to contemporary research and practice in the field;
• Evaluate, select and apply state-of-the-art translation tools, terminologies and technologies as appropriate to research and practice in the field;
• Exhibit and deploy basic professional skills, knowledge and attitudes to translation, in line with national and international occupational and ethical standards;
• Analyse and produce a range of different text, discourse and translation types, utilising the intercultural communication skills developed and honed as part of the programme;
• Identify, design and apply appropriate methodologies for research in translation studies;
• Effectively manage translation project work and present a portfolio of extensive practical translation work involving one or more L1/L2 pairs, demonstrating different translation functions;
• Deploy relevant transferable skills (communication skills, presentation skills, intercultural competence, networking, teamworking etc);
• Utilise appropriate generic research skills.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• To recognise, describe and apply some of the key theories, models and approaches to Translation Studies relevant to contemporary research and practice in the field;
• To select and apply a range of translation tools, terminologies and technologies appropriate to practice in the field of translation;
• To exhibit and deploy basic professional skills, knowledge and attitudes to translation, in line with national and international occupational and ethical standards.
