WORKLOAD GUIDELINE
Where a programme contains elective modules it is recommended that students do not take any more than 40 credits in any semester. Students are therefore advised to choose their modules so that the workload is evenly spread throughout the year.

First Year consists of core modules to the value of 60 credits. In order to be admitted to the First University Examination in Law and Irish a student must have satisfactorily attended prescribed modules as follows:

Note: ¹ LW1112 and LW1114 comprise the same module in English (LW1112) and in French (LW1114). Students may register for either LW1112 or LW1114 but not both.

Examinations

Second Year consists of core modules to the value of 50 credits and elective modules to the value of 10 credits. In order to be admitted to the Second University Examination in Law and Irish a student must have: (a) passed the First University Examination in Law and Irish; and (b) subsequently attended in a satisfactory manner prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

Examinations

This year can be completed in one of three ways, as follows:

(i) at approved placements in Ireland or abroad;
(ii) at an approved placement and study at a University abroad;
(iii) at a University abroad.

In either case, such programme of studies must be under the direction and supervision of Director of the Programme and the Head of Department of Law. This year on placement and/or abroad forms an integral part of the degree programme.

Students take prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

Students undertake a placement in Semester 1 and attend a university abroad for Semester 2.

Students attend a university abroad for Semesters 1 and 2. The choice of courses to be followed abroad is to be made in consultation with the Director of the Programme and the Head of the School of Law in UCC, equivalent to 60 credits.

Fourth Year consists of core modules to the value of 20 credits and elective modules to the value of 40 credits. In order to be admitted to the BCL (Hons) (Law and Irish) Degree Examination, a student must have: (a) passed the Third University Examination in Law and Irish; and (b) subsequently attended in a satisfactory manner prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

Programme Learning Outcomes for BCL (Hons) (Law and Irish) (NFQ Level 8, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Interpret and critically evaluate legislation and case-law;
  • Demonstrate fluency in written and oral Irish, including legal terminology;
  • Translate texts, including legal texts, from English to Irish, and from Irish to English;
  • Use translation tools such as word processors and online sources;
  • Research and write essays, projects and reports using appropriate research and writing standards;
  • Analyse and summarise judicial decision in Irish, and case-law concerning language rights;
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of Irish literature, culture and linguistic history;
  • Demonstrate analytical and summarising skills acquired to help examine the relationship between modern Irish literature and the law;
  • Demonstrate research skills acquired during their placement.
