Timelines and Conditions on Intra-Law Transfers

Note: Every effort has been made to ensure that the programme and module content as described in the University's Calendar and Book of Modules for the 2021-22 academic year are accurate. However, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, no guarantee is given that programme/module content, delivery and assessment may not be altered, cancelled, replaced, augmented or otherwise amended. Any changes will ensure the same competencies and Learning Outcomes are met. Programme and/or Module Coordinators will communicate any such changes to students.

1. Transfers at the end of First Year

BCL (PATHWAYS) to BCL/BCL (Clinical)/BCL (International)

The formal application form for transfer from BCL (Pathways) to BCL, BCL (Clinical) or BCL (International) must be submitted by all BCL (Pathways) I students to the School of Law Office on or before the Friday of Week 10 of the teaching term in Semester 2. Supplementary application form and CV will be required for transfer to BCL (Clinical) II. Interviews for transfer to BCL (Clinical) II will be held in April. Late applications are not accepted and students who do not submit an application form by the deadline will automatically be placed in the BCL programme.
Offers in respect of transfers to all three programmes will be made to students within 2 weeks of the publication of the Year I results. Acceptances of offers will be required in writing on or before the fourth Friday of August. Candidates who have successfully applied for mitigation in respect of their Year I exams will also be considered. For these candidates, a provisional offer will be made which will then be finalised (or not) following the Autumn examinations.

BCL (Law and Business) I to BCL II

In respect of transfers from BCL (Law and Business) I to BCL II, a student may make a transfer application to the School of Law Office on or before the Friday of Week 10 of Semester 2. The School of Law may, at its discretion and subject to places being available, decide to approve such a transfer application (conditional on the student successfully passing the First Year of BCL (Law and Business) and having taken appropriate modules in the First Year to meet any pre-requisites). Transfers will be decided after the summer examination board or autumn board as appropriate. Candidates who have successfully applied for mitigation will also be considered.
BCL (Law and Business) I students who are granted a place on BCL II must take the core 35 modules of BCL II plus LW1153 Criminal Law (10 credits) plus 20 LW elective modules (5 credits of which will be non-degree), a total of 65 LW credits in all. Students will not be permitted to take any non-LW electives in second year.

BCL (Law and French) I to BCL II

In respect of transfers from BCL (Law and French) I to BCL II, a student may make a transfer application to the School of Law Office on or before the Friday of Week 10 of Semester 2. The School of Law may, at its discretion and subject to places being available, decide to approve such a transfer application (conditional on the student successfully passing the First Year of BCL (Law and French) and having taken appropriate modules in the First Year to meet any pre-requisites). Transfers will be decided after the summer examination board or autumn board as appropriate. Candidates who have successfully applied for mitigation will also be considered.
Candidates who transfer in to BCL II must have 100 credits of LW modules successfully completed by the end of second year and so in BCL II must take the core modules for BCL II plus LW1161 (or LW1163) and LW1001 plus 15 credits of LW elective modules; 60 LW credits in total in BCL II. Students will not be permitted to take any non-LW electives in second year.

BCL (Law and Irish) I to BCL II

In respect of transfers from BCL (Law and Irish) I to BCL II, a student may make a transfer application to the School of Law Office on or before the Friday of Week 10 of Semester 2. The School of Law may, at its discretion and subject to places being available, decide to approve such a transfer application (conditional on the student successfully passing the First Year of BCL (Law and Irish) and having taken appropriate modules in the First Year to meet any pre-requisites). Transfers will be decided after the summer examination board or autumn board as appropriate. Candidates who have successfully applied for mitigation will also be considered.

2. Transfers at the end of Second Year

BCL (Clinical) II to BCL III

In respect of transfers from BCL (Clinical) II to BCL III, a student may make a transfer application to the School of Law Office on or before the Friday of Week 10 of Semester 2. In order to be eligible to transfer, the student must have taken appropriate modules in First Year and Second Year to meet the requirements of the programme, including passing LW2214, and the transfer, if approved, will be subject to the student passing BCL (Clinical) II. Transfers will be decided after the summer examination board.

BCL (International) II to BCL III

In respect of transfers from BCL (International) II to BCL III, a student may make a transfer application to the School of Law Office on or before the Friday of Week 10 of Semester 2. In order to be eligible to transfer, the student must have taken appropriate modules in First Year and Second Year to meet the requirements of the programme, including passing LW2215, and the transfer, if approved, will be subject to the student passing BCL (International) II. Transfers will be decided after the summer examination board.
