The MSc in International Public Policy and Diplomacy may be taken full-time over 12 months or part-time over 24 months from the date of first registration for the programme. The taught element of the programme runs from early September to the end of March.

• The normal minimum requirement for applicants is a 2.1 honours degree in any subject;
• Candidates who hold a 2.2 honours degree will also be considered subject to their ‘personal statement’ and references;
• In exceptional circumstances, substantial professional experience in a relevant field may be accepted as compensating for the absence of an undergraduate degree, subject to approval by the programme director and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences;
• All applicants will be required to submit a ‘personal statement’ (indicating why they are interested in taking the MSc (International Public Policy and Diplomacy) and why they think they would be suited to the programme) and two references.
• All applicants whose first language is not English are required to sit either an IELTS test or a recognised equivalent test as approved by Faculty. The minimum requirement is an IELTS score of 6.5 with no individual section lower than 6.0. An exception may be granted where a candidate has been awarded a university degree where the overall content has been delivered in the English language.

As places are limited, all eligible candidates are not guaranteed a place on the programme. Participants will be selected on the basis of the information supplied in their application.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part 1 (60 credits) consists of:

• Core modules (40 credits) - listed below.
• Elective modules (20 credits) - listed below.

Part 2 (30 credits) consists of:

• EITHER GV6013 Work-based Dissertation in International Public Policy and Diplomacy (30 credits)
• OR GV6014 Dissertation in International Public Policy and Diplomacy (30 credits)

Students studying for the degree full-time take all modules in one year.

Students studying for the degree part-time take the programme as follows:

• Year 1 (35 credits): GV6010 (5 credits); GV6011 (5 credits); HI6035 (10 credits); LW6566 (5 credits) and electives to the value of 10 credits.
• Year 2 (55 credits): LW6567 (5 credits); MG6329 (5 credits); GV6012 (5 credits) and electives to the value of 10 credits plus EITHER GV6013 (30 credits) OR GV6014 (30 credits).

From early April to the end of August, students will either go on work placement (GV6013) or write a dissertation (GV6014) to the value of 30 credits. Students who do not go on placement must complete the dissertation. The placement portfolio or dissertation must be submitted at the beginning of September.

Students who successfully achieve the pass standard in Part 1 may opt not to proceed to Part 2 and may opt instead to be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in International Public Policy and Diplomacy.
