Higher Diploma in Midwifery

The Higher Diploma in Midwifery is a full-time programme running for 18 months from the date of first registration for the programme. The programme will be offered on a continuous basis with students commencing the programme in either September or March. Students will receive an 18 month contract of employment with the Cork University Maternity Hospital. The Higher Diploma will comply with the professional requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and the EU directives for registration as a midwife. Registered midwives who complete the programme will be eligible for midwifery registration in another EU Member State when they have completed one further year of clinical practice

The programme is open to registered general nurses. Admission will be subject to the approval of the College of Medicine and Health.

Applicants who have not satisfied the normal entry requirements may, with the approval of the College of Medicine and Health, be considered for admission to the programme on the recommendation of the Head of School.

Fitness to Practise
Commencing with the 2013/2014 intake of first year students (including repeats), this programme will be subject to the University's Fitness to Practise Policy - full details may be found here.

Two Year Rule
Students must pass/progress within two academic years of first registration. After failing a re-sit examination, students may be allowed to repeat the year. Any individual year can be repeated only once. A maximum of two failed years may be repeated during a student's programme of studies. Students who do not then pass the First University Examination in the Higher Diploma in Midwifery will be ineligible to progress further in the programme.

In Year 1 students take taught modules to the value of 40 credits (Part A) and a practice module to the value of 10 credits (Part B). In Year 2 students take taught modules to the value of 30 credits (Part A) and a practice module to the value of 10 credits (Part B).
