This is a 4-year teacher training degree, which will qualify second level teachers of Irish/Gaeilge and one other subject selected from Mathematical Studies, French, German, Spanish or Italian.

Garda Vetting
Students, or applicants in receipt of an offer on this programme will be subject to Garda Vetting as relevant. Change of Subject (First Year only)

Changes to First Year subjects will be allowed, provided subject prerequisites are met, up to four weeks after the start of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 23 October 2020. The online facility for making changes to subjects will only be open for the first two weeks of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 9 October 2020. Subsequent changes up until Friday, 23 October 2020 must be processed manually through the Student Records and Examinations Office, West Wing, UCC.  Changes for FETAC and Mature students and any other student not presenting with a Leaving Certificate must be processed manually through the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences by completing the 'Student Request Form'.

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the First University Examination in Education (Gaeilge) within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule means that the student will be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, only for very serious reasons.

No student may register for Second Education (Gaeilge) until the First University Examination in Education (Gaeilge) has been passed.

Students take 60 credits in the form of (1) 20 credits Irish/Gaeilge, (2) 10 credits of the second selected subject (French, German, Italian, Mathematical Studies, Spanish), and (3) 30 credits Education.

Fourth Year - Education (Gaeilge) (from 2023/24 onwards)

Students take 60 credits of Education, comprising (1) 30 credits Foundation and Professional Studies, and (2) 30 credits School Placement.
NOTE:  The Teaching Council of Ireland requires aspiring language teachers registering with them to have achieved a language competency equivalent to B.2.2 CEFR. Students take Spanish Language Evening Course (‘Advanced Plus’ level, not for credit) and sit the B2 DELE exam; students take Italian Language Evening Course (‘Advanced Plus’ level, not for credit) and sit the CILS exam. Where students have not achieved the required level of language competency in Irish/Gaeilge in Third Year (60% or higher in the summer examinations for GA3001), they will be afforded the opportunity to do so during Fourth Year through an ‘Advanced Plus’ level Irish Language Evening Course, not-for-credit.
