Sixty Quercus Entrance Scholarships of up to €2,000 each, are offered for competition on the basis of results in the Irish Leaving Certificate Examination or equivalent. The Scholarships are tenable only in University College Cork, for the First Year of a full-time primary degree programme.

1. Fifteen Quercus Entrance Scholarships will be awarded in each of the Colleges as follows: Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences; Business and Law; Medicine and Health; Science, Engineering and Food Science.
2. To be eligible to receive a Quercus Entrance scholarship all students must have met the entry requirements for the degree programme that they are validly registered for. Students who have completed a first year in any higher education institution, or significant part thereof, will not be eligible to compete for a Quercus Entrance Scholarship.
3. Scholarships will be awarded in order of merit in accordance with the standard UCC scoring system for Leaving Certificate results as set out under regulations for admission in the University Calendar. Only performance in the six best subjects taken at the first attempt at the same sitting of the Leaving Certificate will be counted. In the event of a tie it may be necessary to award a reduced Scholarship to some candidates.
4. In the case of CAO applicants to Medicine the scholarship fund for the programme will be divided between:
   a) all those on maximum LCE score (625 points);
   and
   b) The top scoring five students based on their combined LCE and HPAT score.
   Students who achieve the standard in both the Leaving Certificate and combined Leaving Certificate and HPAT will be counted once only.
5. If the holder of a Quercus Entrance Scholarship withdraws from the programme for which they have registered or fails to continue throughout the year to meet the attendance and other requirements for the programme including examination entry, they may be required to repay to the University the whole or part of the scholarship.
6. No application form is required for Quercus Entrance Scholarships. Successful students will be notified directly.

In the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, Quercus College Scholarships of €1000 each, tenable for one year, are offered for competition, based on the results of each of the Summer First, Second and Third year University Examinations in programmes offered by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences.

1. Eligibility for a Quercus College Scholarship is the achievement of an overall first class honours standard in the University examination in the year immediately preceding the year in which the scholarship is awarded, the examination to have been passed with a total mark of at least 840 out of 1200.
2. The standard must have been achieved at the first attempt in the Summer examinations unless permission has been given by the University Mitigation Committee to sit the examinations in the Autumn or to split them between Summer and Autumn. Exemption from this regulation will be granted only in the case of certified serious and prolonged illness.
3. In order to be eligible for the award of a Quercus College Scholarship, a student must be registered as a full-time student in University College Cork in the year immediately following the examinations on which the award of a scholarship will be assessed.
4. Second Year Quercus College Scholarships may be awarded on the results of the Summer First University Examinations. Similarly, Third Year Scholarships may be awarded on the results of the Second Year Examinations, and so on.
5. The College shall normally award one scholarship of €1,000 (subject to 3 and 4 above) to the highest scoring student in each year of each programme (other than final year). The Head of College shall also have discretion to make one or more awards (of a reduced amount if deemed appropriate).
6. Each recipient of a scholarship shall also be awarded the title of Quercus College Scholar in 2018/19: followed by an appropriate descriptor based on their degree programme: Arts, Social Sciences, Music, Arts-Music, Applied Psychology, Early Years and Childhood Studies, Drama and Theatre Studies, Sports Studies and Physical Education.
7. In the event that no student in a particular category achieves first class honours, the Head of College shall have the discretion to award an additional scholarship in another category to a student who has achieved first class honours. The Head of College shall also have discretion in such circumstances to make one or more awards (of a reduced amount if deemed appropriate) to a student who, while not achieving first class honours, has achieved results which are the best of the eligible students in his or her category.
8. Should the highest scoring student in any year of any programme also hold a Quercus Active Citizenship Scholarship, Quercus Creative and Performing Arts Scholarship, Quercus Sports' Scholarship, Quercus Innovation/Entrepreneurship Scholarship or Quercus University Scholarship, they will retain the title of Quercus College Scholar but forfeit the monetary award associated with the scholarship. The title Quercus College Scholar and its associated monetary award will in this case pass to the next highest scoring student in the programme for that year.
9. Quercus College Scholarships will be awarded at a College prize giving ceremony.
10. This is a financial prize and all scholars are liable for tuition (if applicable), registration and capitation fees.

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of the previous year's Examination results, i.e. on the Summer Examination 2018 results.

In the College of Business and Law, Quercus College Scholarships of €1000 each, tenable for one year, are offered for competition, based on the results of each of the Summer First, Second and Third year University Examinations in programmes offered by the College of Business and Law.

Assessment Criteria and Marking Scheme
The Scheme has been designed to differentiate fairly, equitably and rationally between the different programmes on offer in the College of Business and Law. The award is based on academic merit. The award, a sum of money and a parchment, will be confined to students, who have successfully completed the relevant academic year during the preceding session in the Programme first chosen by them, in the minimum prescribed time, and is made after the presentation of a report from the College Scholarship Committee to College CEMC/College Council.

General:

• Second Year Quercus College scholarships may be awarded on the results of the Summer First University Examinations. Similarly, Third Year scholarships may be awarded on the results of the Second Year Examinations. Such awards are tenable only in the College of Business and Law, University College Cork, and for the session immediately following their award.
• To be eligible for any such award, a student must not have previously registered for a programme leading to a degree in any third level College other than that for which they are currently registered. The interpretation of such eligibility in any disputed case shall be a matter solely for the decision of the College Scholarships Committee.
• To be eligible for the award of a Quercus College Scholarship in any year a student must have completed the programme of the preceding year, and passed the relevant examination thereon, in the minimum time. Scholarships are awarded on the results awarded at the Summer Examination Board in the previous academic year. Exemption from this regulation will be granted by the Academic Council only in the case of serious and prolonged illness.
• The standard must have been achieved at the first attempt in the spring/summer examinations unless permission has been given by the University Mitigation Committee to sit the examinations in the autumn or to split them between spring/summer and autumn.
• A Quercus College Scholarship will normally be awarded only to a student who has (a) taken the examination concerned as a whole and (b) obtained a first class honours result. In the event that no student in a particular category achieves first class honours, the College Scholarship Committee shall have the discretion to award an additional scholarship in another category to a student who has achieved first class honours. The College Scholarship Committee shall also have discretion in such circumstances to make one or more awards (of a reduced amount if deemed appropriate) to a student who, while not achieving first class honours, has achieved results which are the best of the eligible students in his or her category. If funds remain after the Committee has determined whether or not to exercise its discretion in the above two respects, there shall be discretion to make a token award to the student/s who achieve/s the title of College Scholar.
• Where two or more students tie in academic respects for a Quercus College Scholarship, the College Scholarship Committee shall discretion in such circumstances to make the award to the student who is felt to have contributed significantly to the public life of the University (see below).
• No student is eligible to compete for a scholarship, which s/he has already obtained in a previous session.
• No student from another University or College is eligible to compete for any such award in this University except in an academic grade higher than that held by him/her in the University or College from which he/she came.
• This is a financial prize and all scholars are liable for tuition (if applicable), registration and capitation fees.
• All scholars must devote their whole time to their University programmes and may not, without special permission from the Academic Council, undertake any outside work.
• The Quercus College Scholarships will be awarded at a College prize giving ceremony.

Contribution to the Public Life of the University
The “top student” is defined by reference to examination marks. Where more than one student receives the same top mark the contribution to the University, as judged by involvement in student clubs and societies, is used as a tie-breaker. Submissions will be requested of the students, with at least one reference included to support claims, and these will be considered by the College Scholarships Committee.

• Scholarships are only available for the programmes outlined below. Not included are programmes at Diploma level or those taught as distance learning or where the students spend only one year at UCC.
• Not included are both the BSc Food Business and BSc International Development and Food Policy as these degrees are awarded by the College of Science Engineering and Food Science.

The decision was made to reward students in the course of their studies while they are still at UCC. • The top three in each subject group (detailed below) in first, second and third years are chosen (based on the highest percentage marks).
• The results of the students ranked fourth in each subject group (detailed below) in each year are compared and the student with the smallest gap in percentage point between 3rd and 4th ranked in their group is awarded the seventh scholarship in each of the three years.

Scholars may not hold a Scholarship during an academic year spent abroad or on work placement. Renewal will be decided at the end of the academic year prior to the year spent abroad or on work placement and will be “carried forward” to the year after the academic year spent abroad or on work placement.

Scholars will be expected to act as ambassadors for UCC in terms of their participation in academic activities and in their participation in activities designed to promote the Quercus Talented Students’ Programme.

Successful applicants will:

• Show outstanding achievement within their discipline(s), and will normally be the highest scoring student in continuous assessment and end of semester examinations in the programme of study.
• Show evidence of participation and engagement with the programme of study.
• Show evidence of communication skills, dissemination and engaging with/mentoring peers, related to the discipline (e.g. oral presentation, poster presentation, publication).
• Demonstrate, inter-alia, writing, research/enquiry and critical thinking skills.
• Be expected to act as ambassadors for UCC and the Quercus Programme in terms of their participation in their chosen field.

Successful applicants may:

• Show evidence of provincial, national or international achievement.
• Show evidence of contribution to scholarship.
• Demonstrate excellence in areas not exclusive to their specialist domain.
• Show relevant connections with other disciplinary areas, placing their own discipline in a wider/broader context.
• Demonstrate skills of reflection and an understanding of the value of reflection in the learning process.

Where there are equivalent levels of excellence, the candidate with the most consistent achievement over a number of years will be favoured.

• Be able to provide evidence of sustained engagement in Active Citizenship and have demonstrated significant impact through a regional or national profile for leadership in active citizenship. Evidence of:
• Leadership
• Sustained commitment and
• A discernible outcome or impact in one or more of the following domains of active citizenship: Volunteering, Advocacy, Community Engagement, Social Regeneration, Social Entrepreneurship would be required.
• Have exhibited excellence and the potential to develop that excellence in their chosen field with recognition at regional, national, or international level for their Citizenship efforts. One-off demonstrations of Active Citizenship will be insufficient to be deemed eligible for this Award.
• Be expected to act as ambassadors for UCC and the Quercus Programme in terms of their participation in their chosen field.

University College Cork is pleased to announce that up to 3 Quercus Scholarships for Creative and Performing Arts will be awarded to registered undergraduates in 2016/17 who can demonstrate an exceptional level of excellence in their chosen art form and who have successfully been selected by the Scholarship Panel for a Quercus Scholarship.

Quercus Scholarships for Creative and Performing Arts will be awarded by a Scholarship Panel which may consist of the following:

• The President of UCC or nominee
• The Chair of Academic Council Teaching and Learning Committee, UCC
• The Vice President for Teaching and Learning, UCC or nominee
• Two senior members of UCC’s academic staff with appropriate experience in the arts.
• Admissions Officer, UCC or nominee
• Head of Student Experience, UCC or nominee
• External member invited by the President.

Those applicants shortlisted for interview will be asked to submit a portfolio of their artistic work, submitted in any suitable format beforehand.
Scholarships will be offered to applicants who satisfy the Scholarship Panel (and in turn UCC) as to their suitability to the Quercus Talented Students’ Programme and who can demonstrate excellence in the field of Creative and Performing Arts. The panel’s decisions will be final.

The Scholarship can be renewed for subsequent years, subject to Scholars making a sufficient contribution to the musical or artistic life of UCC, engaging with the activities of the Quercus Talented Students’ Programme and being able to progress to the next level of study in their academic programme.

Scholars may not hold a Scholarship during an academic year spent abroad or on work placement. Renewal will be decided at the end of the academic year prior to the year spent abroad or on work placement and will be “carried forward” to the year after the academic year spent abroad or on work placement.

Applying for a Quercus Scholarship

To apply for a Quercus Scholarship you must:

• Be either a registered UCC student or apply through CAO for a place on an undergraduate programme at University College, Cork commencing in 2015/16;
• Complete the Quercus Sport Scholarships’ application form and send it to the address provided by February 6th, 2015. Remember to include the two required references.

Successful applicants will:

• Meet the minimum entry requirements (matriculation) of their desired undergraduate degree, while currently registered students will need to have attained higher honours in their end of year examinations to be eligible. Applicants do not need to be pursuing a related programme to be deemed eligible.
• Participate in a sport recognised by the Irish Sports Council.
• Be able to provide evidence that they are competing at the highest available level in their chosen sport and have identifiable potential for further improvement. There are a limited number of places based on the following minimum standards of entry:
  Athletics: Schools/Junior international representation.
  Rugby: Schools/age grade international, provincial and/or international representation/provincial academy/Sub-Academy/Overseas or UK equivalent.
  Soccer: Schools/age grade international and/or provincial representation/emerging talent programme/Overseas or UK equivalent.
  GAA: Normally Minor County level and capable of competing at a higher age level.
  Hockey: Interprovincial/International representation (any age).
  Rowing: Junior International representation at the Coupe de la Jeunesse or Junior World Championships. It must also be evident the individual has the potential to progress to the U23 level.
  Other Sports: As defined by the recognised sporting body and evidence of a strong competitive record at the highest level of their chosen sport.
• Be expected to act as ambassadors for UCC and the Quercus Talented Students’ Programme in terms of their participation in their chosen sport.
