THE DEGREE OF MEd (SCIENCE) (not on offer in 2018/19)

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MEd (Science) is a part-time programme running for 24 months from the date of first registration for the programme, designed to facilitate practising teachers.


Entry Requirements
All applicants must be holders of a primary degree in Science and a Professional Diploma in Education (formerly the Postgraduate/Higher Diploma in Education) (or its equivalent) with at least (a) a Second Class Honours degree at primary or Professional Diploma in Education (formerly the Postgraduate/Higher Diploma in Education) level, or (b) five years full-time teaching experience. Applicants will also be required to satisfy a selection committee.

Programme Requirements

PART I - YEAR 1
Students take one Education module (15 credits) plus either three 15-credit Physics modules or three 15-credit Chemistry modules or three 15-credit Biology modules as follows:

PART II - YEAR 2
Students take one Education module (15 credits) and continue with either Chemistry or Physics or Biology, (whichever was taken in First Year), taking three 15-credit modules in Chemistry or three 15-credit modules in Physics or three 15-credit modules in Biology.

Entry Requirements
All applicants seeking entry to the Primary Science stream must be holders of the Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of Science in the Primary School or equivalent. Applicants will also be required to satisfy a selection committee.

A total of 60 credits in the case of a holder of the Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of Science in the Primary School must be accumulated before a candidate is eligible for the award of the degree of MEd (Science).

Effective Science Teaching (15 credits) (not on offer in 2018/19)

In addition, some introductory work (approximately six 2 hour seminars / lab sessions) will be undertaken for module ED6090 but this module will not be examined until year 2.
