The MA in Roman Studies is a full-time programme running for 12 months or a part-time programme running for 24 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Candidates should hold a primary degree with a Second Class Honours Grade 1 (or equivalent) in Ancient History, Greek, Latin, Greek & Roman Civilisation or a related discipline. Candidates who hold a primary degree with a Second Class Honours Grade 2 will also be considered subject to the approval of the programme selection committee. Some applicants who do not fulfil the usual entry requirements may be invited for interview to satisfy the selection committee of their suitability for the programme.

Students take modules to the value of 90 credits comprising of taught modules to the value of 45 credits (Part I) and a dissertation to the value of 45 credits (Part II):

Part I (Semesters 1-2)

(a) Classical Language(s) (30 credits)

If the student has no prior knowledge of either Greek or Latin, s/he must take both
GK6001 Beginners' Ancient Greek (15 credits) and LT6001 Beginners' Latin (15 credits)

If the student has already passed GK6001 (or its equivalent) but has not done Latin, s/he must take:
LT6001 Beginners' Latin (15 credits)
and 15 credits from:
GK2003 Reading Greek (5 credits)
GK2008 Easy Greek Texts (5 credits)
GK3028 Plutarch (5 credits)
GK3031 Lucian (5 credits)

If the student has already passed LT6001 (or its equivalent) but has not done Greek, s/he must take:
GK6001 Beginners' Ancient Greek (15 credits)
and 15 credits from:
LT2009 Reading Latin (5 credits)
LT6008 Livy (5 credits)
LT6009 Virgil: The Aeneid (5 credits)
LT6010 Ovid: Metamorphoses (5 credits)
LT6011 Advanced Latin Language (5 credits)

If the student has already passed both GK6001 and LT6001 (or their equivalents), s/he must take 30 credits from the following modules:
GK2003 Reading Greek (5 credits)
GK2008 Easy Greek Texts (5 credits)
GK3028 Plutarch (5 credits)
GK3031 Lucian (5 credits)
LT2009 Reading Latin (5 credits)
LT6008 Livy (5 credits)
LT6009 Virgil: The Aeneid (5 credits)
LT6010 Ovid: Metamorphoses (5 credits)
LT6011 Advanced Latin Language (5 credits)

All modules must be passed before the dissertation module can be taken. Exemptions may be obtained for modules already passed.

(b) Roman History and Culture in Translation (15 credits)

All students must take
GR6009 Roman Art and Architecture: AD 69 - AD 235 (5 credits)
and 10 credits from:
PG6004 Getting Started with Graduate Research and Generic Skills (5 credits)
PG6010 Contemporary Practices in Publishing and Editing (5 credits)
HI6077 The Classical Revival 1250-1500 (10 credits)
HI6078 New Worlds, Ancient Texts (10 credits)

Part II (Semesters 2-3)

GR6007 Roman Studies Dissertation (45 credits)
Students write a dissertation of a maximum of 20,000 words on a topic chosen in consultation with the Department.

Postgraduate Certificate in Roman Studies exit award
MA Candidates who pass 30 credits of taught modules from Part I may choose to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Roman Studies. A student who subsequently applies to continue to a Master's must do so within 5 years of successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate a critical awareness of the major issues and problems within the field of Roman Studies;
• Evaluate a broad range of primary and secondary sources related to Roman studies;
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the preservation and transmission of Roman culture into the modern era;
• Demonstrate an enhanced knowledge of Latin;
• Demonstrate an enhanced knowledge of Greek;
• Pursue an extended Master's level research and writing project, showing appropriate research, writing and technical skills, demonstrated in a 20,000 word dissertation.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
