*Law (Pathways) offers programmes leading to the award of the following Honours Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) (Hons) Degrees:

At the end of First Year, Students can choose between three pathways: either to graduate in three years with a BCL, switch to the BCL (International)*, an exciting and dynamic four-year degree where students have the opportunity to study at a law school outside Ireland or move to the BCL (Clinical)*, also a four-year course, which incorporates a unique opportunity to work within the legal system and facilitates students’ development of professional, organisational and interpersonal workplace skills.
*Note: Places on the BCL (International) are automatically available to students achieving at least Second Class Honours Grade Two in their First Year Examinations; otherwise it is subject to interview and the availability of places. Transfer to the BCL (Clinical) is dependant on students achieving at least Second Class Honours Grade Two in their First Year Examinations and is subject to a competitive process which will include an interview.

WORKLOAD GUIDELINE
Where a programme contains elective modules it is recommended that students do not take any more than 40 credits in any semester. Students are therefore advised to choose their modules so that the workload is evenly spread throughout the year.

First Year consists of core modules to the value of 50 credits and elective modules to the value of 10 credits. In order to be admitted to the First University Examination in Law, a student must have satisfactorily attended prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the Second University Examination in Law within three academic years from the date of first registration for Second Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Law, only for very serious reasons.

Progression
Law (Pathways) students can choose between three options. First, they can choose to graduate in three years with a BCL, a comprehensive law degree that ensures a critical understanding of the fundamentals of the law, together with exposure to interesting elective areas of legal study.  Secondly, students can switch to the BCL (International), an exciting and dynamic four-year degree where students have the opportunity to study at a law school outside Ireland. Transfer to the BCL (International) is automatically available to students achieving at least Second Class Honours Grade Two in their First Year Examinations; otherwise it is subject to interview and the availability of places. The final option is the BCL (Clinical), also a four-year course, which incorporates a unique opportunity to work within the legal system and facilitates students’ development of professional, organisational and interpersonal workplace skills. Transfer to the BCL (Clinical) is subject to a competitive process.

Second Year consists of core modules to the value of 35 credits (or 25 credits if LW1106 Law of Torts I and LW1107 Law of Torts II have been selected in First BCL (Hons)) and elective modules to the value of 25 credits (or 35 credits if LW1106 Law of Torts I and LW1107 Law of Torts II have been selected in First BCL (Hons)). In order to be admitted to the Second University Examination in Law a student must have: (a) passed the First University Examination in Law; and (b) subsequently satisfactorily attended prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

There are two possible paths in Third Year of BCL (Clinical). Students in this programme must complete either one or two approved clinical work placements, either nationally or abroad, with an appropriate legal body or organisation. Each placement is of 12 weeks duration and must be completed on a full-time basis. Registration for the Final Year BCL (Hons) (Clinical) programme at UCC must directly follow Third Year.

Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Law only for very serious reasons.

There are two paths in this programme in Third Year.

PATH 1:
Students must attend an approved European or North American or Chinese university law school on a full-time basis for one academic year between the completion of the Second University Examination in BCL (Hons) (International) and the commencement of the Final Year BCL (Hons) (International). The choice of courses to be followed abroad is to be made in consultation with the Dean of the School of Law in UCC or his/her delegate. Registration for the Fourth Year BCL (Hons) (International) programme in UCC must directly follow the year spent abroad.

PATH 2:
Students must attend an approved European or North American or Chinese university law school on a full-time basis for one semester in the academic year between the completion of the Second University Examination in BCL (Hons) (International) and the commencement of the Final Year BCL (Hons) (International). The choice of courses to be followed abroad is to be made in consultation with the Dean of the School of Law in UCC or his/her delegate. Examinations

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the Third University Examination in Law (International) within three academic years from the date of first registration for Third Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Law, only for very serious reasons.

Fourth Year consists of core modules to the value of 25 credits and elective modules to the value of 35 credits. In order to be admitted to the BCL (Hons) (Clinical) Degree Examination, a student must have: (a) passed the Third University Examination in BCL (Hons) (Clinical), and (b) subsequently attended in a satisfactory manner, for at least a full academic year, prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:
