WORKLOAD GUIDELINE
Where a programme contains elective modules it is recommended that students do not take any more than 40 credits in any semester. Students are therefore advised to choose their modules so that the workload is evenly spread throughout the year.
First Year consists of core modules to the value of 60 credits.
In order to be admitted to the First University Examination in Law and
Irish a student must have satisfactorily attended prescribed modules
as follows:
Core Modules
GA1003 Bunstaidéar ar Theanga agus ar Chultúr na Gaeilge (15 credits)
GA1030 Bunreacht na hÉireann (1937): An Leagan Gaeilge (5 credits)
LW1001 Legal Writing (5 credits)
LW1104 Foundations of the Legal System (5 credits)
LW1112 Constitutional and Institutional Law of the European Union (5 credits)
LW1153 Criminal Law (10 credits)
LW1154 Law of Contract (10 credits)
LW1162 Constitutional Law: Institutions of Government (5 credits)
For teaching purposes, the Teaching Council require that students must have verifiable residential experience of at least two months in an area designated as a Gaeltacht area. In order to fulfill this requirement an additional 5 credit module, GA3025 Tréimhse Chónaithe sa Ghaeltacht, is available to students taking this programme. The module is taken in addition to the prescribed programme requirements, at no cost to the student. Work towards this module can be undertaken in part in Semester 3 of years 1, 2 or 3 but must be completed in time for the Summer or Autumn Examination Board in the final year of the programme. All students will register for this module in their final year, irrespective of when they actually undertake it. Attendance at, and examination in, the module will be recorded on the student transcript. The module will not contribute to the final degree award. Students wishing to take this module should contact the Head of the Department of Modern Irish for further information.

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the First University Examination in Law and Irish
within three academic years from the date of first registration for
First Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the
student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies.
Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Law, only for
very serious reasons.
Second Year consists of core modules to the value of 50 credits
and elective modules to the value of 10 credits. In
order to be admitted to the Second University Examination in Law and
Irish a student must have: (a) passed the First University Examination
in Law and Irish; and (b) subsequently attended in a satisfactory
manner prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits

(i) at approved placements in Ireland or abroad;
(ii) at an approved placement and study at a University abroad;
(iii) at a University abroad.
In either case, such programme of studies must be under the direction
and supervision of Director of the Programme and the Head of
Department of Law. This year on placement and/or abroad forms an
integral part of the degree programme.

Students take a further 30 credits of approved courses at the host
university.
Path (iii)
Students attend a university abroad for Semesters 1 and 2. The choice
of courses to be followed abroad is to be made in consultation with
the Director of the Programme and the Head of the School of Law in
UCC, equivalent to 60 credits.

Examination in Law and Irish; and (b) subsequently attended in a
satisfactory manner prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits
as follows:
