BA (Hons) Degree (awarded in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences)

NFQ Level 8, Major Award

Entry to the BA (Hons) Degree in Celtic Studies is on the basis of the First University Examination in Arts. Students must achieve honours in Irish, and in one other recognised subject (e.g. Celtic Civilisation). In the Second and Third Years students take units from Group A or Group B below.

HONOURS OPTIONS

Group A

(i) Early and Medieval Irish, Middle Welsh

(ii) Modern Irish and selected modules of Léann Dúchais

(It is not necessary to have taken Welsh or Léann Dúchais in First Arts to qualify for this option).

or

Group B

(i) Early and Medieval Irish, Middle Welsh (ii) Irish History, Archaeology (It is not necessary to have taken First Arts Welsh or Archaeology to qualify for this option. It is a requirement, however, to have gained honours in History in the First Arts Examination).

(i) Early and Medieval Irish, Middle Welsh

Second Arts
a. Foundation Course in Early and Medieval Irish. Text: Old-Irish Paradigms and Selections from the Old-Irish Glosses (Strachan-Bergin).
b. Literature: Early Irish Poetry.
c. Textual Study: Prose Narrative. Texts: Scéla Mucce Meic Dathó (Thurneysen); Serglige Con Culainn (Dillon).
d. Celtic Philology.
e. Middle Welsh: Text: Branwen Uerch Lyr (Thomson).

A written essay will form part of the year's assessment.

Third Arts
a. Language: Texts: Stories from the Táin (Strachan & Bergin); Old-Irish Reader (Thurneysen). Other materials may be selected.
b. Literature: A literary history of Irish to 1200 A.D.
c. Texts: The Irish Adam and Eve Story from Saltair na Rann (Greene & Kelly); Bethu Brigte (O hAodha), Féilire Oengusso Céili Dé (Stokes) (extracts from Prologue).
d. Manuscript Reading.
e. Middle Welsh: Poetry: Text: The Poems of Taliesin (Williams & Williams).

A written essay will form part of the year's assessment.

(ii) Modern Irish and selected modules of Léann Dúchais

The Irish modules will be identical to those for the degree in Arts. The Béaloideas modules will be those chosen from Léann Dúchais (2 per year).

Group B

(i) Early and Medieval Irish, Middle Welsh

Modules as for Group A above.

(ii) Irish History, Archaeology

Modules to be nominated by the Departments of History and Archaeology.
