The Diploma in Irish Traditional Music is a full-time programme running over one academic year and is offered to Visiting, Non-EU students only. The programme is designed for applicants who seek to increase their proficiency and knowledge in Irish Traditional Music by taking a range of specialised modules in this area taught by the Department of Music, UCC.

Applicants are expected to have either some experience of Irish Traditional Music or extensive musical abilities in other genres of music, and must satisfy the Head of the Department of Music that they have the musical skills required to undertake the programme. Applicants may be required to submit an audition tape. Applicants will be required to fulfil the normal matriculation requirements of CK101 (see here). To be admitted to the University Examination in Irish Traditional Music, students must have satisfactorily attended, for at least a full academic year, prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

two 10-credit modules on topics relating to Irish Traditional Music and the discipline of ethnomusicology, as prescribed by the Department of Music in the year in question;

one 5-credit module of the student's choice, which may be in Music or in a subject other than Music.

In all cases the choice of modules, and of options within modules, is subject to the approval of the Department of Music.

Examinations
Full details of regulations governing Examinations for each programme will be contained in the Marks and Standards 2018/2019 Book, and for each module in the Book of Modules, 2018/2019.

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the University Examination in Irish Traditional Music within three academic years from the date of first registration for the Diploma in Irish Traditional Music. Failure to comply with this rule means that the student will be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, only for very serious reasons.
