of Science in the Primary School

Postgraduate Diploma - NFQ Level 9, Major Award

This is a part-time programme running for 18 months over two academic years from the date of first registration for the programme.


Applicants must hold a recognised teaching qualification in primary education and satisfy a selection committee.


Students will register for the Postgraduate Certificate in Year 1 and take modules to the value of 30 credits. Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate students may opt to register for the Postgraduate Diploma in Year 2 and take modules to the value of 30 credits. Three modules will be offered each year on a cyclical basis.

Application and Transfer to the MEd (Science)
For candidates who satisfactorily meet the entry requirements of the MEd (Science), and have successfully passed the Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of Science in the Primary School, an exemption of 60 credits of the taught element of the MEd (Science) programme will be granted.
