The Certificate in Irish Politics is offered to Visiting Students only (i.e. JYA students, Visiting Erasmus students, etc). It runs in Semester 2 of each year (January - April with end of module exams taking place in May).

To be considered for the award of Certificate in Irish Politics a student must have satisfactorily attended modules to the value of 30 credits below.

Core Modules

Students take 20 credits as follows:
GV3108 Introduction to Politics of Ireland (5 credits)
GV3206 Politics in Northern Ireland (5 credits)
GV4413 Public Finance 2 (5 credits)
GV4415 Contemporary Debates in the EU (5 credits)

Elective Modules

Students will choose 10 credits of elective modules from the range of modules available to Visiting Students (here) in consultation with the Programme Director and subject to timetable and other constraints.

Programme Learning Outcomes for the Certificate in Irish Politics (NFQ Level 7, Special Purpose Award)

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• Understand the institutions, structure and processes of Irish politics;
• Understand Northern Irish politics and Ireland's position within the Union;
• Relate Irish politics to wider debates in political science;
• Research and write assignments on Irish politics.
