The BA (Hons) (Drama and Theatre Studies) is a three-year degree programme. Applicants for this programme must pass a Drama and Theatre Studies Entrance Test, as well as fulfilling the minimum entry requirements detailed here). Teaching at DTS is research-led and is informed by a practice-based approach to teaching and the complementary relationship between theory and practice. Students should note this is not a vocational training programme. Emphasis is placed on learning through doing, that is, through performative practices, where thinking and making are continually integrated.

Drama and Theatre Studies - Single and Joint Honours
Students taking the BA (Hons) (Drama and Theatre Studies) programme may take the Single Honours option consisting of 50 credits in Drama and Theatre Studies and 10 credits in another Arts subjects in each year, or the Joint Honours option consisting of 30 credits in Drama and Theatre Studies and 30 credits in another Arts subjects in each year.

Places for Single Honours Drama and Theatre Studies are limited and will be allocated based on (1) the interview results for CK112, (2) first year assessment from Year 1, and (3) further discussion/interview with department as necessary.

Students who wish to take Drama and Theatre Studies with Music must first apply through the CAO for CK112. In addition to the normal CAO requirements, such students must also satisfy the Professor of Music and the College that they are capable of successfully completing the Music component of the programme by taking and passing a Music test. Students taking Drama and Theatre Studies with Music take 30 credits of Music and 30 credits of Drama and Theatre Studies in each year.

To be eligible for the award of the BA (Hons) (Drama and Theatre Studies) degree a student will be required to have achieved 180 credits by obtaining 60 credits in each of First, Second, and Third Arts (Drama and Theatre Studies). A student may not register for more than 60 credits in one year.

Drama and Theatre Studies - International Pathway (see here)
The BA (Hons) (Drama and Theatre Studies - International) is a four-year programme, taking the 30 or 50 credit option (single or joint honours) in Drama and Theatre Studies, along with one other Arts subject, which enables students of Drama and Theatre Studies to study for one year (i.e. Third Year) in an approved University outside Ireland.

In First Arts (Drama and Theatre Studies) students take Drama and Theatre Studies (30 credits) together with two other subjects (15 credits each) from those listed below. It is recommended that at least one of these subjects be a language/literature subject. To avoid timetable clashes no more than one subject may be chosen from any separate group below. Students should also note when making subject choices that not all subjects can be taken as a 10 credit or a 30 credit option in Second and Third Arts.

Note: Students wishing to take Drama and Theatre Studies with Music must choose the subjects Music and Musicianship, as taken by students on the Arts-Music (CK104) programme (here). Students wishing to take the International Pathway in Second Year and who wish to spend Third Year at a European University must include French, German, Italian or Spanish as one of their First Year subjects.

Points to Note:

1. German: Students wishing to select German (Beginners) are recommended to have a minimum grade H3 in another modern continental language or Irish or Latin or Greek in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Students wishing to select German (Non Beginners) should have a minimum grade H4 in German in the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent). Students will be accepted to the Beginners group only if they have no prior German, or if they have reached a level no higher than Junior Certificate German.
2. Latin: Students cannot continue with Latin in Second and Third Year
3. Mathematics: Due to timetable restrictions, Mathematics may not be combined with Celtic Civilisation or Spanish in First Year. Students who wish to take Mathematics must have a H3 in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or its equivalent).
4. French: A student will not normally be allowed to select French unless he/she has attained a pass standard in French in the Leaving Certificate Examination or equivalent.
5. Béaloideas: Students wishing to select Béaloideas should normally have a minimum grade H4 in Irish in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Lectures are through the medium of Irish. Students intending to register for the International Pathway in second year should note that they cannot also register for Béaloideas in second year.
6. Greek: Students cannot continue with Greek in Second and Third Year
7. Italian: Students wishing to take Non-Beginners' Italian are recommended to have a minimum of Grade H4 in Italian in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Students who have studied Italian at second level and obtained a grade below H4 can join the Beginners' Italian course.
8. Spanish: Students wishing to take Beginners' Spanish must have obtained a Grade H4 in the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) in another modern continental language, or Irish, or Latin, or Greek. Students wishing to take Non-Beginners' Spanish must have obtained a minimum of Grade H4 in Spanish in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent).

Change of Subject (First Year only)

Changes to First Year subjects will be allowed, provided subject prerequisites are met, up to four weeks after the start of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 6th October 2017. The online facility for making changes to subjects will only be open for the first two weeks of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 22nd September 2017. Subsequent changes up until Friday, 6th October 2017 must be processed manually through the Student Records and Examinations Office, West Wing, UCC.  Changes for FETAC and Mature students and any other student not presenting with a Leaving Certificate must be processed manually through the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Office, G31, O'Rahilly Building. Three Year Rule
Students must pass the First University Examination in Arts (Drama and Theatre Studies) within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule means that the student will be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, only for very serious reasons.

No student may register for Second Arts (Drama and Theatre Studies) until he/she has passed the First University Examination in Arts (Drama and Theatre Studies). The selection of any module is conditional on the Professor or Lecturer concerned and the College being satisfied that a student is capable of profiting by attendance thereat. Students may not select modules which involve a timetable clash.

In Second Arts, Drama and Theatre Studies students have the option of taking pathways in either Joint Honours Drama and Theatre Studies or Single Honours Drama and Theatre Studies as follows:

Joint Honours Drama and Theatre Studies: Students take 30 credits of Drama and Theatre Studies and take the remaining credits (to total 60 each year) in one other subject continued from First Year. Note: Students taking Drama and Theatre Studies with Music combine 30 credits of Drama and Theatre Studies with 30 credits of Music modules, as taken by Second Year students on the Arts-Music (CK104) programme (see here).

Single Honours Drama and Theatre Studies: 50 credit subject: a limited number of places (Minimum 6) will be offered to students wishing to register for 50 credits in Second Year in 2017/18 and Final Year in 2018/19. Places for Single Honours Drama and Theatre Studies will be allocated based on (1) first year assessment from Year 1, and (2) on students’ statement of intent and their proven commitment to the discipline of Drama and Theatre Studies. 

Along with 50 credits in Drama and Theatre Studies, Single Honours students take the remaining credits (to total 10 each year) in one other subject continued from First Year.

Internship Option: Between Year 2 and Year 3 students registering for either Joint or Single Honours have the option of completing a work placement within an established/professional arts organisation (DR3001 – 5 credits) amounting to 4 weeks full-time, or equivalent, with an approved theatre company, performing arts organisation or theatre performance group in Ireland or abroad. Assessment for DR3001 will be based on satisfactory completion of the internship and on a presentation and portfolio of documentation completed during the first Semester of Third Year (see module description for further details). Students will be responsible for arranging the internship, in consultation with academic staff and for any/all costs incurred arising from the Practical Internship/Work Placement.

Change of Module
Students wishing to register a change of module must do so via the Student Portal or at the Student Records and Examinations Office no later than two weeks after the start of each Semester, i.e. by Friday, 22nd September 2017 (Semester 1) or Friday, 26th January 2018 (Semester 2). Semester 1 modules cannot be changed in Semester 2. No changes in registration will be allowed after these deadlines.
