BA (Hons) (Applied Psychology) - CK106

NFQ Level 8, Major Award

This three-year BA (Hons) programme focuses on the study of Applied Psychology and is recognised for graduate membership by the Psychological Society of Ireland.

To be eligible for the award of the BA (Hons) degree a student will be required to have achieved 180 credits by obtaining 60 credits in each of First, Second, and Third Arts (Applied Psychology). A student may not register for more than 60 credits in one academic year.

Students take Applied Psychology in First Arts together with two other subjects from the First Arts programme. To avoid timetable clashes no more than one subject may be chosen from any separate group below:

1. Asian Studies, Computer Science, History, Portuguese
3. Archaeology, German1, Latin, Mathematical Studies, Mathematics2, Politics
4. French3, Sociology
5. Béaloideas4, Economics, English, Greek, Religions and Global Diversity
6. (a)# Geography, Italian5
6. (b)# Celtic Civilisation, Philosophy, Spanish6

#Students can combine a subject from 6(a) with a subject from 6(b) in first year.

Points to Note:

  1. German: Students wishing to select German (Beginners) are recommended to have a minimum grade H3 in another modern continental language or Irish or Latin or Greek in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Students wishing to select German (Non Beginners) should have a minimum grade H4 in German in the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent). Students will be accepted to the Beginners group only if they have no prior German, or if they have reached a level no higher than Junior Certificate German.
  2. Mathematics: Students who wish to take Mathematics must have at least a H3 in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or its equivalent).
  3. French: A student will not normally be allowed to select French unless he/she has attained a pass standard in French in the Leaving Certificate Examination or equivalent.
  4. Béaloideas: Students wishing to select Béaloideas should normally have a minimum grade H4 in Irish in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Lectures are through the medium of Irish.
  5. Italian: Students wishing to take Non-Beginners' Italian are recommended to have a minimum of Grade H4 in Italian in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Students who have studied Italian at second level and obtained a grade below H4 can join the Beginners' Italian course.
  6. Spanish: Students wishing to take Beginners' Spanish must have obtained a Grade H4 in the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) in another modern continental language or Irish, Latin, or Greek. Students wishing to take Non-Beginners' Spanish must have obtained a minimum Grade H4 in Spanish in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent).

Change of Subject (First Year only)

Changes to First Year subjects will be allowed, provided subject prerequisites are met, up to four weeks after the start of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 6th October 2017 . The online facility for making changes to subjects will only be open for the first two weeks of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 22nd September 2017. Subsequent changes up until Friday, 6th October 2017 must be processed manually through the Student Records and Examinations Office, West Wing, UCC.  Changes for FETAC and Mature students and any other student not presenting with a Leaving Certificate must be processed manually through the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Office, G31, O'Rahilly Building. Programme Requirements First Arts (Applied Psychology)

Students take 60 credits as follows:
AP1105 (5 credits), AP1108 (10 credits), AP1110, AP1223, AP1349 (5 credits per module)
plus two other First Arts subjects (15 credits each) from those listed above.

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the First University Examination in Arts (Applied Psychology) within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule means that the student will be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, only for very serious reasons.

No student may register for Second (Applied Psychology) until he/she has passed the First University Examination in Arts (Applied Psychology). The selection of any module is conditional on the Professor or Lecturer concerned and the College being satisfied that a student is capable of profiting by attendance thereat. Students may not select modules which involve a timetable clash.

In Second Arts students take a Single Subject Degree in Applied Psychology consisting of modules to the value of 60 credits in Applied Psychology.

Change of Module

Students wishing to register a change of module must do so via the Student Portal or at the Student Records and Examinations Office no later than two weeks after the start of each Semester, i.e. by Friday, 22nd September 2017 (Semester 1) or Friday, 26th January 2018 (Semester 2). Semester 1 modules cannot be changed in Semester 2. No changes in registration will be allowed after these deadlines.

Single Subject

Students take 60 credits as follows:
AP2102, AP2103, AP2104, AP2105, AP2106, AP2107, AP2109, AP2111, AP2204 (5 credits per module), AP2209 (15 credits)

AP3101*, (5 credits), AP3108 (20 credits), AP3111, AP3114** (5 credits)

plus 25 credits (with a minimum of 10 credits and maximum of 15 credits in each semester) from the following:

At least one module from:
AN4009, AN4012, AP3039, AP3102 (5 credits)
and
At least two modules from:
AP3015, AP3030, AP3037, AP3110, AP3115, AP3399 (5 credits)
and

At least one module from:

AP3020, AP3033, AP3104, AP3299 (5 credits)

*Students who passed AP2101 cannot select AP3101 but must take 5 credits from the above list of electives instead.
**Students who passed AP2203 cannot select AP3114 but must take 5 credits from the above list of electives instead.
