MSc (Nursing)

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MSc (Nursing) for Non-EU applicants is a full-time programme (i.e. 90 credits) taken over 12 months from the date of first registration (commencing in September of each year). It is designed to provide students from outside Ireland and EU (i.e. non-EU applicants) and from a range of different nursing backgrounds with a Masters degree including the option to prepare as clinical nursing specialist or advanced nurse practitioner in their home country.

The Programme comprises three pathways:

  1. Non-clinical (theory modules only)
  2. Clinical Specialist Nursing
  3. Advanced Nursing Practice

Applicants for Pathway 1: Non-clinical (theory modules only) should:

(a) hold active registration on a division of the professional register maintained by the Nursing Board/Statutory Body in their own country.

(b) hold a primary degree in nursing (minimum Second Class Honours standard) OR hold a Higher/Postgraduate Diploma in relevant nursing area.

(c) if first language is not English, provide current evidence (i.e. within past 5 years) of proficiency in English as follows:

Applicants for Pathway 2 (Clinical Specialist Nursing) AND Pathway 3 (Advanced Nursing Practice) should:

(a) hold active registration on a division of the professional register maintained by the Nursing Board/Statutory Body in their own country or in the country in which they intend to practice while undertaking the programme. NOTE: Applicants may take clinical practice modules in their own country OR in Ireland (Registration with Irish Nursing & Midwifery Board would be required to practise in Ireland and this would need to be completed prior to acceptance onto the programme www.nursingboard.ie/en/apply_forms.aspx). For candidates who choose to complete practice module in their home countries, the School of Nursing and Midwifery must be satisfied that appropriate organisational support structures and clinical supervision are in place. Alternatively, completion of practice module in Ireland will be possible only if the School of Nursing and Midwifery can negotiate the relevant placements with local health providers.

(b) hold a primary degree in nursing (minimum Second Class Honours standard) OR hold a Higher/Postgraduate Diploma in relevant nursing area.

(c) if first language is not English, provide current evidence (i.e. within past 5 years) of proficiency in English as follows:

(d) Provide original Police Clearance Certificate(s) from the country or countries of residence (only if practice placement is in Ireland).

(e) Provide Original Medical Report/Health Screening Form (only if practice placement is in Ireland).

(f) Complete Police Vetting Process on arrival during registration (only if practice placement is in Ireland)

(g) Have clinical practice experience (and support structures, if applicable) as required for individual pathways as follows:

Pathway 2: Clinical Specialist Nursing: Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ post-registration experience (excluding courses) within which they have at least six months experience in the speciality pathway applied for. In addition, applicants must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
OR
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for clinical specialist practice if such requirements are set down by the Nursing Board or other Professional Regulatory Body in their country of practice.

Pathway 3: Advanced Nursing Practice: Applicants must have a minimum of seven years post-registration experience, within which they must have at least five years’ experience in their selected clinical area for advanced practice area (exclusive of educational programmes)
OR
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for advanced practice if such requirements are set down by the Nursing Board or other Professional Regulatory Body in their country of practice.

NOTE
: For the above clinical pathway on Advanced Nursing Practice, candidates will not be eligible to register as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with the Irish Nursing & Midwifery Board on completion of the programme. The programme prepares candidates for registration and/or practise in their home countries.

Note: Students taking the practice module in Ireland will be in a supernumerary context and not as employees. In addition, completion of practice module in Ireland will be possible only if the School of Nursing & Midwifery can negotiate the relevant placements with local health service providers.
