WORKLOAD GUIDELINE
Where a programme contains elective modules it is recommended that students do not take any more than 40 credits in any semester. Students are therefore advised to choose their modules so that the workload is evenly spread throughout the year.

NEW MODULE CODES
A number of the existing 10-credit modules have been split into one or two 5-credit modules (please see table below). If you have registered for and passed any of the old ‘parent’ modules, you are precluded from registering for either of the associated 5-credit modules.

First Year - BCL (Law and Business)

First Year consists of core modules to the value of 65 credits (40 credits Law; 25 credits Business).  In order to be admitted to the First University Examination in Law and Business, a student must have satisfactorily attended prescribed modules to the value of 65 credits as follows:

  1. LW1161 and LW1163 comprise the same module in English (LW1161) and as Gaeilge (LW1163). Students may take either LW1161 or LW1163 but not both. LW1162 and LW1164 comprise the same module in English (LW1162) and as Gaeilge (LW1164). Students may take either LW1162 or LW1164 but not both.

Examinations

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the First University Examination in Law and Business within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Law, only for very serious reasons.

Second Year consists of core modules to the value of 60 credits (25 credits Law; 35 credits Business). In order to be admitted to the Second University Examination in Law a student must have: (a) passed the First University Examination in Law and Business; and (b) subsequently satisfactorily attended prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the Third University Examination in Law and Business within three academic years from the date of first registration for Third Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Law, only for very serious reasons.

Fourth Year - BCL (Law and Business)

Fourth Year consists of modules to the value of 60 credits comprising core modules to the value of 20 credits in Law and a minimum of 5 more elective credits of Law (making a total of at least 25 credit of Law) and a minimum of 20 elective credits of Business.  In order to be admitted to the BCL (Law and Business) (Hons) Degree Examination, a student must have: (a) passed the Third University Examination in Law and Business; and (b) subsequently attended in a satisfactory manner prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits as follows:
