CK117 - BA (HONS) (ECONOMICS)

NFQ Level 8, Major Award

The BA (Hons) Economics is a three-year degree programme. Applicants must fulfil the minimum entry requirement specified here.

To be eligible for the award of the BA (Hons) Economics degree, a student will be required to have achieved 180 credits by obtaining 60 credits in each of First, Second and Third Arts (Economics). A student may not register for more than 60 credits in one year.

The BA (Hons) (Economics) (International) Pathway is a four-year programme which enables students to study abroad for a year in an approved University outside Ireland.

In First Arts (Economics) students take Economics (45 credits) together with one other subject (15 credits) from those listed below.

1. Asian Studies, Computer Science, History, Portuguese
2. (a)# Applied Mathematics, European Studies, Folklore, Greek and Roman Civilisation, Gaeilge/Irish, Studies in Psychology
2. (b)# History of Art
3. Archaeology, Chinese Studies, German, Latin, Mathematics, Mathematical Studies, Politics
4. French, Sociology
6. (a)# Geography, Italian
6. (b)# Celtic Civilisation, Philosophy, Spanish

#Students can combine a subject from group 2(a) with a subject from group 2(b) as well as a subject from group 6(a) with a subject from 6(b) in first year.

Change of Subject (First Year only)

Changes to First Year subjects will be allowed, provided subject prerequisites are met, up to four weeks after the start of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 7 October 2016 . The on-line facility for making changes to subjects will only be open for the first two weeks of Semester 1, i.e. until Friday, 23 September 2016. Subsequent changes up until Friday, 7 October 2016 must be processed manually through the Student Records and Examinations Office, West Wing, UCC.  Changes for FETAC and Mature students and any other student not presenting with a Leaving Certificate must be processed manually through the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Office, G31, O'Rahilly Building. Programme Requirements First Arts (Economics)

Students take 60 credits as follows:
EC1107, EC1108 (5 credits per module), EC1109 (10 credits), EC1111, EC1112, EC1113, EC1114, EC1115 (5 credits per module)
plus one other First Arts subject (15 credits).

Three Year Rule

Students must pass the First University Examination in Arts (Economics) within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule means that the student will be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, only for very serious reasons.


No student may register for Second Arts (Economics) until he/she has passed the First University Examination in Arts (Economics). The selection of any module is conditional on the Professor or Lecturer concerned and the College being satisfied that a student is capable of profiting by attendance thereat. Students may not select modules which involve a timetable clash.

Student who wish to take the four-year option with a year abroad must register for the BA (Economics) (International) Pathway at the beginning of Second Year.

In Second Arts students take a Single Subject Degree consisting of modules to the value of 60 credits in Economics.

Single Subject

Students take 60 credits as follows:
EC2006 (10 credits), EC2009, EC2010, EC2011, EC2012, EC2013, EC2014, EC2015, EC2016, EC2017, EC2018 (5 credits per module).
