OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES

Undergraduate Scholarships and Prizes are awarded on the basis of the previous year's Examination results, i.e. those listed in the 2015/2016 University Calendar are based on Summer Examination 2014 results.

THE BOSTON COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

A UCC student, at either Undergraduate or Postgraduate level, is invited to study at Boston College in almost any discipline and for the full academic year. The successful student, who will be of high honours standard, will receive remission of tuition and registration fees and a scholarship to the value of $10,000. The scholarship will be awarded as often as funds allow. Information on the Boston College Scholarship is available from the International Office, University College Cork.

COLBY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

University College Cork has a student exchange programme with Colby College, Maine. Colby College is the twelfth oldest independent undergraduate liberal arts college in the United States and offers rigorous programmes of study in the Arts and the Sciences. Under the programme, a UCC student, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, is invited to study at Colby for the full academic year. The successful candidate will receive remission of tuition fees and free room and board. Further information is available from the International Office, University College Cork.

GEORGE J. MITCHELL PEACE SCHOLARSHIP

In recognition of the historic role of George J. Mitchell in advancing the security, hope and opportunity for generations in Ireland and Northern Ireland, the George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship has been established. The purpose of the Scholarship is to create opportunities for the exchange of university students between Ireland and the State of Maine.

University College Cork has been nominated by the Minister for Education and Science to send suitably qualified students under the Scholarship to an institution in the University of Maine System. To qualify for the Scholarship a student must be:

1. at least 18 years of age.
2. be registered full time and have completed at least one full year.
3. have a record of high academic achievement.
4. have demonstrated leadership abilities and a commitment to community service.

Students who are immediate past graduates of UCC are eligible to apply for the Scholarship.

The successful candidate will receive remission of tuition and academic fees and free room and board. The successful candidate is also expected to receive a stipend of $900 per semester and two return flights to the United States.

THE HARTING SCHOLAR

A place will be offered annually at University College Cork to a student of English from one of the Dutch universities.

  1. This student will be called the Harting Scholar and will be attached to the Language Centre, a constituent part of the School of Language and Literature.
  2. The Harting Scholar will be allowed to choose one or more courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level from the programmes offered by the School of Language and Literature and/or the Departments of History and Modern Irish and cognate departments in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences.
  3. The fees will be waived for the Harting Scholar.
  4. He/she will be prepared to teach and assist in examining Dutch as required by UCC with a maximum of four hours of weekly teaching.
  5. The Harting Scholar must have attended a three-day instruction course, which is held every year in May, especially for the twenty-six or so Harting Scholars who are going to teach Dutch at universities in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
  6. Travel expenses and subsistence will be arranged by the Harting Committee.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIPS

University College Cork has a student exchange programme with the University of California. Two UCC students, at either Undergraduate or Postgraduate level, are invited to study at any campus of the University of California, in almost any discipline. The successful candidates will receive remission of tuition fees and a scholarship to the value of $6,000. The scholarships are awarded to students of high honours standard. The scholarships are advertised during the first Semester of the academic year. WASHINGTON COLLEGE

University College Cork operates a student exchange programme with Washington College, Maryland. The College is a liberal arts institution located 75 miles from Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington DC. Washington College has a particularly strong reputation in English and offers a nationally renowned creative writing programme. Applications are invited from students at undergraduate or postgraduate level to spend an academic year at Washington College. The successful applicant will receive remission of tuition fees. THE WILLIAM L. MARKEY SCHOLARSHIP

University College Cork has a student exchange programme with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Under the programme, a UCC student, at undergraduate level and in any discipline, is invited to study at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for a full academic year. In addition to a tuition and registration fee waiver, the UCC student will be the recipient of the William L. Markey Scholarship. The scholarship, to the value of at least $5,000, will be awarded as often as funds allow and to a student of high honours standard. Information on the William L.
