MEngSc Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing, Process and Automation Systems)

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MEngSc Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing, Process and Automation Systems) is a full-time programme running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Candidates must have an honours Bachelor Degree (NQF Level 8 or equivalent) with a minimum grade 2H2 in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline that should have covered mechanical engineering fundamentals such as mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and materials.

Candidates, for whom English is not their primary language, should possess an IELTS of 6.5 (or TOEFL equivalent) with no less than 6.0 in each individual category.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

In Part I students select modules to the value of 50 credits and a Preliminary Research Project (ME6019) to the value of 10 credits. Part II consists of a Dissertation in Mechanical Engineering (ME6020) to the value of 30 credits which is completed over the summer months.

Modules in Part I are offered subject to availability. Alternative modules may be offered. The choice of modules is subject to the approval of the Programme Coordinator.

Part I

Students must select a total of 50 credits from the following modules, with no more than 35 credits in any Semester:

Examinations
Full details and regulations governing Examinations for each programme will be contained in the Marks and Standards 2016 Book and for each module in the Book of Modules 2015/2016.

Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing, Process and Automation Systems)
A candidate, who passes Part I but does not achieve an average mark of at least 50% across the taught modules excluding the Preliminary Research Project (ME6019) or does not achieve a mark of at least 50% in the Preliminary Research Project (ME6019), will be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing, Process and Automation Systems). A candidate, who passes the Part I examination and does not wish to proceed to Part II, may opt to be conferred with a Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing, Process and Automation Systems).
