CONTEMPORARY MIGRATION AND DIASPORA STUDIES (not on offer in 2015/16)

NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MA in Contemporary Migration and Diaspora Studies is a full-time programme running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.


In order to be permitted to proceed to the MA degree in Contemporary Migration and Diaspora Studies, a candidate must hold a primary degree with a Second Class Honours Grade I (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. Applied Social Studies, Applied Psychology, History, Geography, Law, Politics, Sociology or cognate disciplines, e.g. Anthropology). Candidates with a primary degree with a Second Class Honours Grade II will also be considered, subject to a written expression of interest and/or an interview. Final acceptance is subject to approval by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, UCC.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part I
GG6401 Introduction to Migration and Diaspora Studies (15 credits)
GG6402 Research Methods and Sources in Migration and Diaspora Studies (15 credits)
GG6403 Case Studies and Current Issues in Migration and Diaspora Studies (10 credits)
and
10 credits from:
either
GG6405 Work Placement, Programme for Migration and Diaspora Studies (10 credits)
or
LW6584 Refugee Law (5 credits) and LW6585 Migration Law and Human Rights (5 credits)

Part II
GG6404 Dissertation in Migration and Diaspora Studies (40 credits)

Examinations

Postgraduate Certificate in Contemporary Migration and Diaspora Studies  
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Contemporary Migration and Diaspora Studies.
