The MA in Film Studies is a full-time programme, running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.
An applicant will have a primary degree of at least Second Class
Honours Grade I in the Humanities. Successful applicants will normally
have evidence of successful performance in undergraduate modules taken
in Film Studies and/or practical/professional expertise or
qualification in the area. Applications from students with a Second
Class Honours Grade II degree in a suitable subject may also be
considered. These applicants may be requested to submit a proposal
and/or attend an interview. All candidates must satisfy a Selection
Committee who may request applicants to provide letters of reference.
Students take 90 credits as follows:
Part I
FX6003 Research Methodologies Seminar (5 credits)
FX6007 Advanced Studies in
Film: American Cinema (10 credits)
FX6013 Advanced Studies in
Film: World Cinema (10 credits)
plus
20 credits from the following:
CS6104 Digital Video Capture and Packaging (5 credits)*
CS6504 Digital Video Project (5 credits)*
FX6004 Film, Feminism and Psychoanalysis (10 credits)
FX6006 Music and Cinema (10 credits)
FX6010 Irish Cinema: History, Contexts, Aesthetics (10 credits)
FX6012 Seminar on Film Studies (10 credits)
Note: *CS6104 and CS6504 must be
taken together. Maximum 6 students.
Part II
FX6001 Dissertation in Film Studies (45 credits)

Postgraduate Certificate in Film Studies
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Film Studies.
