The MA in Applied Linguistics is a full-time programme taken over 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

For students commencing the programme in 2015/16 only
In order to be admitted to the MA in Applied Linguistics a candidate must have a BA (Hons) Degree in a language or equivalent degree.

For students commencing the programme from 2016/17 onwards
In order to be admitted to the MA in Applied Linguistics, a candidate must have a 2.1 BA (Hons) Degree which includes a language.

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part I
AL6011 General Aspects of Linguistic Theory (15 credits)
AL6012 Applied Aspects of Linguistics (15 credits)
AL6013 Optional Areas of Specialisation in Applied Linguistics (15 credits)

Part II
AL6010 Dissertation in Applied Linguistics (45 credits)

Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics
Candidates who pass at least 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics.

Programme Learning Outcomes for MA in Applied Linguistics (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• Examine and analyse language at different levels of linguistic analysis in relation to the phonetics and phonology of language systems, the morphology and syntax of language systems, and pragmatics;
• Discuss theoretical approaches to the study of language from an applied perspective;
• Use appropriate linguistic terminology to describe language in relation to different branches of applied linguistics;
• Discuss language issues relating to different branches of applied linguistics;
• Discuss issues in language learning and acquisition theory and practice;
• Carry out a project in an area of applied linguistics for the purposes of a minor dissertation, including the application of appropriate methodology, collection of data and their empirical analysis.

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
