The Higher Diploma in Business, Language and Culture in East Asia is a full-time programme running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Candidates must hold a Level 8 (Honours) degree or equivalent qualification. Candidates without the relevant educational qualification who have relevant experience may also apply.

All applicants whose first language is not English should have attained IELTS 6.5 (with no individual section lower than 5.5) or TOEFL equivalent.

A selection committee may seek to interview applicants. In the case of competition for places selection will be made on the basis of the candidate’s experience and interview performance (if required to attend for interview).

Students take 60 credits as follows:

Core Modules:
AS5011 Final Workshop (5 credits)
AS5307 East Asia: History, Geo-politics and Political Economy (5 credits)
AS5308  East and South East Asia - Business Development ( 10 credits)
AS5309 East Asian Business Research Report (10 credits )

AND 30 credits from the following:
AS5102 Chinese Language - Business Documentation (10 credits)  
CH1003 Chinese Language - Level 1 (Mandarin) (10 credits)  
CH1008 Chinese Language - 1b (Mandarin) (10 credits)  
OR

Two of the following:
AS1506 Japanese Language A110 (10 credits)
AS1508 Japanese Language A120 (10 credits)
AS1511 Japanese Language A210 (10 credits)
AS1513 Japanese Language A220 (10 credits)
AS1515 Japanese Language B110 (10 credits)
AS1517 Japanese Language B120 (10 credits)

AS5100 Japanese Language - Business Documentation (10 credits)

Programme Learning Outcomes for Higher Diploma in Business, Language and Culture in East Asia (NFQ Level 8, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• demonstrate the competencies required to market, interact and negotiate successfully with Chinese and/or Korean and/or Japanese business in Ireland or Asia.
• show evidence of historical, cultural and socio-political knowledge and analytical competence relevant to the understanding of East Asian markets.
• display skills in market analysis, business documentation awareness and business research report writing.
• deploy critical analytical skills in relation to business and culture of East Asia.
• communicate in modern Chinese, Japanese or Korean to a level commensurate with the language modules studied.
