2015/2016

EXAMINATIONS

Registration at the beginning of the academic year also constitutes examination entry for the Semester 1 (December), Spring or Semester 2 (Summer) Written Examinations*.

*For candidates whose first examination is in Autumn, registration constitutes examination entry.

An examination timetable for written examination will be available for viewing on the Web at least two weeks prior to the start of the written examinations.

The dates for the main written examinations are available at www.ucc.ie/en/registration.

Candidates for examination will be required to print their individual timetables (final version) from the Web. The timetable has the following information: Examination Papers being taken, Date, Time, Duration, Venue and Seat Number.

Provisional examination results will be made available on the Web to each student as soon as possible after the Examination Board Meetings.

Note: Students who are eligible are automatically entered for the Autumn Supplemental Examinations in the subjects/modules failed. There is an examination entry fee for Autumn/Winter Supplemental Examinations.

In certain modules, there is no provision for an Autumn Supplemental Examination and students must repeat the year.

Distribution of marks and assessment details (including Formal Written Examination Profile) for individual modules are contained in the Book of Modules, 2015/2016.

Repeat students are required to re-attend their respective modules before again presenting for the relevant examination, and they are required to re-present for examination in the current courses in their relevant module.

Students may find it useful to note the following terminology which is used in connection with examination results:

Progression

In certain programmes, candidates whose marks are below pass standard in one or more modules, but above a specified minimum level, may pass those modules by compensation and may progress forward to the next year of the programme.

Carrying Forward Marks

In certain examinations, a student who passes in one or more modules of the Examination in Summer but fails overall, need not re-sit the passed modules in the Autumn. If he/she does not then pass, he/she must normally re-present all modules at the next attempt. The abbreviation used for carrying forward is C/F.

Exemption

In certain circumstances, candidates who pass in one or more modules, but fail overall, are exempted from any further examination in the passed modules. Such exemptions carry time limits. The abbreviation used for exemption is EX.

General enquiries regarding examination matters should be made to the Student Records and Examinations Office, University College Cork.

Consultation meetings for discussion of examination results will be available to students who fail examinations in the Summer. Further details may be found in the Examination Regulations and Procedures - Handbook for Students.

Marks and Standards

A copy of the Marks and Standards Book, which contains full details of regulations governing examinations, is published on the web annually.

Examination Regulations and Procedures: Handbook for Students and for Staff

The Examination Regulations and Procedures: Handbook for Staff and for Students, is intended as a summary of examination procedures for staff and students and is available here

Regulations for Examinations

It is the responsibility of each student to acquaint himself/herself with the regulations concerning each examination, including the timetable of examinations and the location thereof.

Suspected Cheating at an Examination/Plagiarism

Further information on regulations, procedures and penalties on suspected cheating at examinations/plagiarism can be viewed in the Examination Regulations and Procedures: Handbook for Staff and for Students.

Absence from an Examination

Registration at the beginning of an academic year constitutes entry for the Semester 1 (December), Spring and Semester 2 (Summer) Written Examination.

A student who is prevented for medical reasons or other personal circumstances from attending all or part of an examination, and who has not withdrawn from the programme, should submit to the Registrar and Senior Vice-President Academic a full report (including a medical certificate) or a full report setting out the other personal circumstances as soon as possible and not more than three days following his/her last examination for the consideration of the Board of Examiners.

Where a student fails to present for a Semester 1, Spring, Semester 2, or Autumn Written Examination in a module, a judgement of "Absent" is recorded for that module. "Absent" is counted as an attempt at an examination. Where a module is examined by a combination of Continuous Assessment and Formal Written Examination, and the student does not present for the Formal Written Examination, an "Absent" judgement and the mark for Continuous Assessment are recorded. The mark recorded for the module is then based on the mark for Continuous Assessment and a zero mark for the written component, using the rules for obtaining the overall module mark which pertain to the module in question. Where a module is assessed wholly by Continuous Assessment, and the student presents no work, a "Presented No Work" judgement is recorded.

Supplemental Examinations

Students who are eligible are automatically entered for the Autumn Supplemental Examinations in the Subjects/modules failed. There is an examination entry fee for Autumn/Winter Supplemental Examinations. If a student does not intend to sit an Autumn Supplemental Exam, they must inform Student Records and Examinations Office by 24 July.

Capping of Marks at a Supplemental Examination

In determining aggregation, progression, and the calculation of honours, the maximum mark that will be taken into account is a pass - 40% (or 50% in the case of the College of Medicine and Health). The actual mark achieved by the candidate will be recorded on the student record.

Mitigation Committee

The University's Mitigation Committee deals with applications for waiver of the capping of marks in a module at a Supplemental, or where applicable, at a Repeat Year Examination. A student who is prevented for medical reasons or other personal circumstances from attending all or part of an examination may apply for the waiver of capping of marks. In certain circumstances an application for a partial/full deferral of examinations and the waiver of the capping at the Autumn Supplemental/Repeat Year Examinations received before the first Friday in April will be considered by the Chairperson of the Mitigation Committee, and the Registrar. Further information on the mitigation process is available from the Student Records and Examinations Office or at http://www.ucc.ie/en/exams/procedures-regulations.

Formal Checking and Appeal of Examination Results

There is provision for Formal Checking and Appeal of Examination Results. Details and applications forms for students are available on www.ucc.ie/en/exams/procedures-regulations or from the Student Records and Examinations Office.
