To be admitted to the School of Business for the programme of study leading to the degree of BComm (Hons) (International), an applicant must have met the specified Language requirements as detailed here. Students opting for one of the first four BComm (Hons) (International) Degrees listed above will spend a year abroad pursuing an appropriate course of study or, in the case of BComm (Hons) (International) with Irish, some students will spend a period in internship and complete a series of projects/reports.

Hispanic Studies [CK208]

Note regarding selection of Spanish language modules: Students wishing to take HS1101 must have obtained a minimum Grade HC3 in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent) in another modern continental language or Irish, Latin or Greek. Students who have studied Spanish at second level and obtained a Grade below HB3 can also join the Beginners' Spanish course. (Note for School Leavers: School Leavers must satisfy the minimum entry requirements for CK208 as well as satisfying the additional requirement of obtaining a HC1 in one of French, German, Gaeilge/Irish, Italian, Spanish, Latin or Greek for admission to CK208).

Irish [CK209]

GA1003 Bunstaidéar ar Theanga agus ar Chultúr na Gaeilge (15 credits)

For teaching purposes, the Teaching Council require that students must have verifiable residential experience of at least two months in an area designated as a Gaeltacht area. In order to fulfill this requirement an additional 5 credit module, GA3025 Tréimhse Chónaithe sa Ghaeltacht, is available to students taking this programme.  The module is taken in addition to the prescribed programme requirements, at no cost to the student.  Work towards this module can be undertaken in part in Semester 3 of years 1, 2 or 3 but must be completed in time for the Summer or Autumn Examination Board in the final year of the programme.  All students will register for this module in their final year, irrespective of when they actually undertake it.  Attendance at, and examination in, the module will be recorded on the student transcript. The module will not contribute to the final degree award.  Students wishing to take this module should contact the Head of the Department of Modern Irish for further information.

Three Year Rule
Students must pass the First University Examination in Commerce (International) within three academic years from the date of first registration for First Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Business, only for very serious reasons.

In addition to the General Regulations for passing the year, the following Special Requirements for Languages apply:

No student may register for the Second Year programme of study until the First University Examination in Commerce (International) has been passed. Second Year consists of core modules to the value of 35 credits and Language modules to the value of 25 credits from one of the Language subjects. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Business, only for very serious reasons.

In addition to the General Regulations for passing Second Year the following Special Requirements for Languages apply: French: To progress to Year Three of the BComm (Hons) (International) with French, students must pass module FR2103 (10 credits); German: To progress to Year Three of the BComm (Hons) (International) with German, students must pass module GE2801 (10 credits); Italian: To progress to Year Three of the BComm (Hons) (International) with Italian, students must pass module IT2101 (10 credits); Hispanic Studies: To progress to Year Three of the BComm (Hons) (International) with Hispanic Studies, students must pass module HS2101 or HS2102 (10 credits); Irish: To progress to Year Three of the BComm (Hons) (International) with Irish, students must pass module GA2001 (10 credits).

Year Abroad Students (i.e. students taking French or German or Italian or Hispanic Studies or Irish language students who opt to spend the year at the University of Aberdeen or University of Edinburgh):

This year is spent pursuing approved programmes of study in a country of the student's major continental language. Programmes taken will be validated by the host institution. To fulfil requirements for the successful completion of this year, a student must achieve a pass standard, as applied by the host institution, on a set of courses approved by the School of Business, UCC. Marks shall be submitted to the Autumn Examination Board, UCC with a Supplemental Board in Winter. Failed elements of continuous assessment must be re-submitted. Where failed elements are re-submitted, a student will continue his or her studies subject to passing the winter examination board.

German Language Students

Students must spend the third year abroad which consists of two semesters (one academic year) at a partner university in Germany or Austria (60 credits). In some cases students may be able to opt for a work placement at the discretion of the programme director. In this case the year abroad would consist of one academic semester at a partner university in Semester 1 (comprising 30 credits), followed by an approved work placement in Germany or Austria (comprising 30 credits, see GE3309 German Work Placement (20 credits) and GE3310 German Work Placement Oral Presentation (10 credits) which are compulsory modules for the work placement).

Irrespective of whether students spend two semesters at a partner university, or one semester at university together with a work placement, the Year Abroad must amount to 60 credits overall. Marks shall be submitted to the Autumn Examination Board, UCC.

Irish Language Students

Students will be required to spend a period in internship and complete modules. These modules, amounting to a total value of 60 credits are:

Irish language students may spend this year pursuing approved programmes of study at the University of Aberdeen or the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is important to note that a maximum of four places are available under this option. Students interested in availing the Scottish option will indicate their interest by the last Friday in February of their Second Year. Should more than four students indicate an interest, the places will be allocated by random selection.

Spanish Language Students

Students may opt to:

1. Attend a full academic year in a host university;
OR
2. Attend university and undertake a work placement.

Option 1
Students taking option 1 (full academic year) may:

take an academic placement worth 60 credits at the host institution
OR
take an academic placement worth 50 credits at the host institution and the online Spanish module HS3012 (10 credits).

Option 2
Students taking option 2 (attend university and undertake a work placement) must complete the International Work Placement module HS3011 (15 credits) and the online Spanish module HS3012 (10 credits), combined with an academic placement at university worth 35 credits.

In both cases, modules amounting to a total value of 60 credits must be taken.

Examinations
Marks will be submitted to the Autumn Examination Board, UCC with a Supplemental Board in Winter. In the case of students of Irish who opt for internship, marks are submitted to the Summer Examination Board. Three Year Rule
Students must pass the BComm (Hons) (International) Degree Examination within three academic years from the date of first registration for Fourth Year. Failure to comply with this rule would mean that the student would be ineligible to proceed further with his/her studies. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by the School of Business, only for very serious reasons.
